Heavy Rains Pummel Bangalore: Roads, Houses Flooded

Bangalore, Apr 22 (TNN): The rain came down, and as usual, traffic stopped and houses were flooded. The steady downpour went on late into the night on Thursday April 21 and continued on Friday April 22, bringing down the mercury.

The rainfall, which measured around 7.4mm, was described by officials as normal when taking the entire month into account. But as rain on a single April day, it was significant, with Yelahanka coming under nearly 14.7mm of heavy rain. Showers are expected for two more days, and will complete the seasonal period by April-end.

The spell of rain definitely brought respite from the heat, keeping temperatures low and moderate. Parts of South, North and East Bangalore received good rain but caused a traffic jam around the central business district. The road from MG statue to CTO Circle was chock-a-bloc with vehicles inching along.

KG Road was also jammed with vehicles close to the KSRTC bus stand. Rain, coupled with the long weekend and buses heading out of Bangalore, were responsible for the jam, people at Majestic bus stand said. There was water-logging in areas close to Bommasandra, and some houses were also flooded, BBMP officials said.

There were complaints from Shantinagar, Madiwala and Tavarekere. While one tree reportedly fell on Malleswaram 15th Cross, others fell on Hennur main road and near ITC factory in Banaswadi. No injuries were reported. There were also complaints of power failure from RT Nagar and BTM Layout.
