Anti-conversion Bill clears Legislative Council test amid Congress walkout

Bengaluru, Sep 15 (IANS): The ruling BJP in Karnataka had the last laugh on Thursday as the controversial anti-conversion Bill got smooth passage in the Legislative Council amid a walkout by principal opposition Congress party.

The Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill 2021 was tabled by home minister Araga Jnanendra and passed by voice vote after prolonged debate. The opposition Congress party which has been vociferously opposing the Bill, walked out of the Council ahead of the voice vote.

Although the controversial Bill had earlier been cleared by the Legislative Assembly in December 2021, the ruling BJP opted for the Ordinance route in May this year, as it did not have the numbers to steer it through the 75-member Legislative Council. However, with the BJP enjoying a majority in the Upper House after the Council elections in July this year, it decided to table the contentious Bill on Thursday.

Karnataka's version of the Bill is seen as more stringent than in other BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Home minister Araga Jnanendra said conversions are becoming rampant through unfair means.

The Bill aims to protect one's right to freedom of religion and prohibition of unlawful conversion from one religion to another by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or by any fraudulent means.

The Bill includes provisions for compensation of up to Rs 5 lakh to be paid by the accused to those who were forced to convert. In cases of mass conversion, punishment ranges from 3-10 year imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs one lakh.

Mathew 22:14 says: Many are called but few are chosen. 1Peter 4:18: If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?' Jeremiah 31: 33: “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Nothing happens without God's permission It is the Lord who converts because the Bible itself says: John 6: 44: No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. JESUS IS THE ONLY LORD AND SAVIOR . AMEN

If God wanted one religion he would have done that because it is beleived that Gods power is unlimited. why he did not do that when the could have easily done that thereby avoided a unwanted friction amongst his own creation is a thought that is very difficult to understand. No wonder the number of atheists are increasing each passing day as some basic questions will never answered by religious scoholors.

what is the main reason for conversion which creates so much confusion in the society. If I want to get converted into any other faith I will decide and I don't want the Pastor coming to my doorstep and asking me to do so.

Why do you think it's a huge setback to christian missionaries, get your facts corrected , Christian are opposing it because it's against democratic and constitutional norms, as already there are many anti conversion bills in place.

Anti-conversion Bill clears Legislative Council test-- For a few stray cases -- also many are suspect -- a BILL is passed -- there are enough other laws already in existence and police can apply existing sections if such a threat existed -- needless politics -------------- WHAT ABOUT AN ANTI CORRUPTION LAW -- 40 % -- Declaration of assets -- many in benami names-- if any asset found --Not being allowed to contest elections -- permanently banned -- cannot change more than 2 parties in 10 years -- with a gap of minimum one year -- so can avoid Horse trading or Donkey trading -- Strengthening Disproportionate assets cases -- In 5 years, assets of politicians reach 1000 % -- HOW --? FOR COMMON MAN --Bank deposit if one applies the famous 70 rule -- @ 5 % takes 14 years to double -- by which time inflation makes it half --

Praise The Lord. My dear Christian brothers and sisters. do not be afraid. pray more and the results will be there to see very soon. Jesus Christ our Lord will never forsake us. Remember how he sent flood and rains and killed 10000 for killing missionaries in a state of our country. How he sent earthquake in state where Christians were persecuted. So he knows to act. Keep on Praying. Be Lord with all of us. The true God cannot be arrested by these kind of threats. Glory be to God Amen.

Proper law exist and correctly worded. Why HM wants to tamper with it. Same thing is being said but now govt. wants to interfer. Why ??. Just to get two minute of fame in the media. Don't waste time on rubbish things but concentrate on more important things like giving jobs to the unemployed and food to the poor. These things seem to be of no value to him. Then he has no other work to do.

There is no scope for anti conversion law in a democracy. Already there is anti forced conversion law in force. So what is the difference between this new bill and the existing law?. The new bill looks like dictatorial bill without any right to religion but the right is conditional subject to approval by the govt whereas the existing law is a democratic law with full right to religion without anyone’s interference.

Meaningless bill which perceives "converted people" to be incapable of making their own decisions. People pushing for such legislation may need to learn how to treat some of their own people fairly instead of being afraid of such people converting.

It is the political conversion of our democratically elected leaders that hurts the country and the voters of the country. And that needs to be strengthened with stringent measures to stop defection until election.. So that the voters can decide for themselves on who should represent them.
