Kasargod, Sep 16: Excise department sleuths have confiscated Rs 30 lacs in cash, suspected to be Hawala money, which was being carried in a bus without proof of evidence or documents and arrested a person in this connection.

The accused arrested is identified as a resident of Maharashtra Sharad Dabade (22).

Manjeshwara excise department officials were inspecting the KSRTC bus plying from Mangaluru to Kasargod in the morning on September 16 when they found the cash. The accused reportedly told the police that the amount was being carried to be handed over to take back pledged jewellery from Malappuram, Manjeria.

The accused was carrying the cash hidden within a cloth that was rolled over it. The cash consisted of Rs 21 lacs in 500 rupee notes and Rs 9 lacs in 2000 rupee notes, the excise department officials said.

Sharad Dabade has been handed over to Manjeshwara police. The income tax department is also investigating.
