Rahul Gandhi to decide on contesting President poll: Venugopal

New Delhi, Sep 21 (IANS): Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal said on Tuesday that it's up to Rahul Gandhi to decide whether he will contest the election for the party President's post, adding that everything will be clear within a week.

Venugopal, who met interim party chief Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday, said, "I had some pending work of the party so I came to meet her."

However, he also claimed that every party worker wants Rahul Gandhi to be the next Congress President.

Earlier, Venugopal was asked to come to Delhi and meet Sonia Gandhi. The Congress leader was part of the party's 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' since it was launched from Kanyakumari on September 7.

Meanwhile, the Congress on Tuesday reiterated that anyone can contest the Presidential election since it is a democratic and transparent process where no nod is required from the party leadership.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted, "The entire party is immersed in making #BharatJodoYatra a success. Even so it's important to reiterate that any member is welcome to contest for Congress President. This is a democratic & transparent process. Nobody needs anybody's nod to contest, especially that of party leadership."

The election to pick the next Congress President will be held on October 17. It is likely that the main contest will be between Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.

    There would be a vertical split in the party ,no matter who ever becomes the president in the party. Shashi Tharoor will not make any impact on the party as he cannot connect with the grass root workers . His reach will limited to certain part of Kerala otherwise its Muslim league which actually controls the party rest of kerala. If Ashok Gehlot becomes the president, the party would split directly from his state itself .

    If G3 family members retire from Congress party, I think then only some hopes for Congress party to come back. This is my view.

    indo-somalis have been big liability for nehru family... v k krishna menon, m o mathai for nehru... vincent george who misused pmo connection for obtaining refugee US visas for many ind-somalis.. he was kept out for a while by family for this reason but managed to sneak back in...still holding on... pc alexander who was faithful servant of family but when Sonia disapproved his ambition for President, he abused her in uncivilised manner... a k antony who was secret pm aspirant.. not to be seen when family is in doldrums ... same for our k c george who got the cream from congress and family when they were powerful... this man now fully into construction activity and after forest wealth... and this rape accused GS of congress chanting praise of family and pushing congress to doom...

    Like Flavian Sir has opined here, Rahul is in a dilemma whether to focus on grass roots or be at the top. In between, Solar Venu in Kerala has brought ht out the sailor in him. Good rowing he had done. All this is adding ro the confusion. Tharoors entry with his English has really turned rhe scenario into a mixed, mashed messed up Salad. What is the solution?

    Boss, there is already disgruntlement in the Congress party over Shashi Tharoor becoming the president. ST is a tough task master. This which wont go well with the oldies, as they are used to relax and appear only in press conferences every now and then to be relavant. Under RaGa it was okay as he was out most of the time. Also the Gandhi family wont agree to this as ST may not be a chamcha like others.

    Flavian, it is your wish but in reality what happens God only knows. First of all Rahul let the party to reach so low in India and now Jairam Ramesh is ruining it further. Did you watch his TV interview , he is not much different in terms of outlook and behavior compared to Mani Shankar Iyer. As long as party has such insensitive leaders who do not have subject to discuss in public the party would not come up. Further senior leaders like RV Deshpande and many are ready to quit the party due to suffocation.
