Puttur, Sep 22: Mackerel is being caught in huge quantities by fishermen of Tamil Nadu, Malpe and Mangaluru fish ports. In the rural fish markets of Dakshina Kannada Mackerel is sold at Rs 50 per kilo and people are thronging to the fish market to make most of the good time.
In Tamil Nadu, demand for fish during Mahalaya and Navaratri is very low. So export from Mangaluru and Malpe sea port to Tamil Nadu is very less. In addition, fish from Tamil Nadu arrives into the markets of Dakshina Kannada. So the price falls down too low.
The price of fish has gone down by 50% in the last one month. In certain markets of Bantwal and Puttur, mackerels from Tamil Nadu are sold as brought from Mangaluru and Malpe.
In the past two days brisk business of fish has taken place in Kalleri and Kuppetti near Uppinangady. On Wednesday alone, three trucks of fish was sold. The price of one box of fish was Rs 1,500 only. The box contains 30 kg of fish. Even in retail the fish was being sold for just Rs 50 per kilo. Due to the low price, hotel owners and public are buying in large numbers and stocking the same in refrigerators.
