Mangalore: Electronic Eyes to Keep Watch on City Activities

Mangalore, Apr 29: The city, which had often witnessed communal flare ups and notorious activities in the past, will henceforth have another gadget in place to enable the policemen to keep watch over anti-social activities and take remedial measures without loss of precious time. The police department has decided to install cameras at strategic places in the city for the purpose.

The task of fixing over 30 closed circuit cameras in spots chosen by the police department is now in progress. Godrej Company has bagged this tender. These cameras will work without break, and can operate all the 360 degrees. The task is expected to be completed by mid-May. In all likelihood, these cameras will be functional before June 1.

City commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, has revealed that places like Hampankatta, PVS Circle, Jyoti, Mahavir Circle, Lalbagh, Lady Hill, State Bank, KSRTC bus stand, railway station, Kottara Chowki, Bunder among others, have been chosen for keeping round-the clock watch. In addition, cameras will also be focussed on other important roads in the city, and three national highways which connect the roads leading into the city.

Facilities to view the movements through these cameras have been set up at the police control room. The policemen will be able to keep tab over movements at all the places at once. The department hopes that these cameras will help the policemen to identify culprits involved with unsavoury activities and indict them without loss of time. The city, after Bangalore, will be the second city in the state to get this facility, and the police personnel believe that these cameras will improve their efficiency.
