M'lore: Human Rights, Values Destroyed by Vested Interests – Justice S R Nayak

Mangalore, Apr 29: Emphasizing that humanity and human rights are inseparable part of democracy, Naaadoja Dr Justice S R Nayak, chairperson of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, Bangalore said that there is a strong need for enterprises, management authorities, and media to inculcate the values of humanity, without which India will fail to remain a ‘Kalyana Rajya’.
He was speaking at the two-day national conference on ‘Developing humane society through human rights protection: problems and prospects’ organized by ‘Human Rights Cell’ of the A J Institute of Management(AJIM) in association with the Human Rights Commission, Bangalore and the Hindu as media partner at the college premises , Kottara Chowki here on Friday April 29.
Stressing that all in the universe are entitled to rights and freedoms without distinction of any kind, he pointed out even today millions of children are deprived of a dignified life and many communities are left in slavery and is a fact prevailing in our ‘developing’ nation.
Condemning the horrendous caste system he said human rights are quite often sacrificed mercilessly to sustain graded inequality. He called upon everyone to be ‘Vishwa Manavas’ by imbibing true human values. He criticized the morale policing in coastal region in particular and said no one has the right to attack any ‘worship places’ of any communities. He also strongly condemned few media groups for spoiling human rights by false representation of the facts. He noted human rights also can not be protected without removing corruption in system.
He also said that in spite of sufficient laws to protect human rights in the country, Government has failed to protect it among the marginalized segments of the people. He added by working together progress is possible and dialogue as well as co-ordinated action involving all sectors is the key to make globalization, liberalization and open market work for protecting all human rights.
H R Deshpande, principal district and sessions judge, Mangalore was the chief guests. A J Shetty, managing director, A J Group of Institutions, Mangalore presided.
There will be panel discussion, technical session and paper presentation on both the days of conference. The valedictory ceremony will be held on Saturday April 30 at 3.45 pm.
