Udupi: 6 drowning tourists rescued in Malpe beach; one dies, another serious on festival holiday

Udupi, Oct 4: A total of six tourists were rescued from drowning in Malpe beach on Tuesday, October 4. Among six, one person has succumbed in hospital and another person is admitted in a private hospital in a critical condition.

Due to the holiday season, thousands of tourists are visiting Malpe and other surrounding beaches. Tosibh, a native of Mysore, attempted suicide in Malpe beach on Tuesday. However, he was rescued by lifeguards with much difficulty.

Senthil, a native of Salem in Tamil Nadu and Basavaraju a native of Bijipur who visited the beach with his family was rescued by lifegueards after they were seen drowning.

In another incident, Nawaz was found drunk and was swimming in the sea. Lifeguards noticed him drowning at around 2:30 PM and they saved him immediately.

Soham Ghosh, who was swimming with his friends was caught in the high tides. He was trapped in a Whirlpool but was rescued on time by the guards.

In another incident, Salam Cherry from Bengaluru and Abrar from Mysuru had gone for swimming even after the lifeguards alerted them about the danger. They were found drowning at 4.30 PM and the lifeguard team rescued them with a lot of difficulties. Salam cherry immediately was rescued and Abrar Ahmed was taken to a hospital immediately in a serious condition. Due to failure of lungs, he was declared dead later.

    life guards of Malpe are doing commendable job...Tourist should follow safety instructions..Malpe beach is safe...mostly drunk tourist or arrogant get drowned.

    Unlike goan beaches our beaches are steep with underwater currents locals know this and don't go into the sea don't understand why govt is promoting beaches for tourism while temples and other places of worship are more than enough.

    Many of the tourists who visit the beaches don't know swimming and particularly how to tackle waves. I wish authorities make floating jackets compulsory and should be provided to visitors on minimum rental basis per hour.

    Previously there was a huge board in English and Kannada informing and warning visiting Locals and Tourists on the DOs and DONTs on this beach. This board disappeared a few years ago when Malpe beach was hit by a hurricane and destroyed much of its infrastructure. Let the Malpe Beach Managing Committe get this very important board up besides the Mahatma Gandhi square and at the beginning of the beach too. Also close the booze bar at the only old restaurant at the Malpe beach entrance. This facility is contrary to ethics and safety. Let only the Restaurant serve only food.
