Mangaluru, Oct 8: Recently, 5G mobile communication system is introduced in the country. Police have alerted public that online fraudsters may take the advantage of this and fleece them.
Jio, Airtel and Vodafone have introduced 5G services. There is a possibility that the online fraudsters might introduce themselves as representatives of companies and say that they will update the SIM cards from 4G to 5G. Subsequently, they may ask the person to send the OTP of click on the link and fleece the money from the account. Hence, the police have urged the public not to give OTP under any circumstance or click the link sent.
Cyber security expert Dr Anantha Prabhu said, “There is no need for OTP to upgrade SIM cards from 4G to 5G. No one should have doubt about this.
“Cyber fraudsters contact consumers and try to see that the person gets OTP to his or her mobile through various methods. Then they steal the information from the OTP. Sometimes, the fraudsters may use the SIM of the consumer on the pretext of upgrading. This type of fraud is called SIM Swap. We expected that this kind of fraud might take place during upgradation to 5G. Hence, we alerted the public. However, according to recent reports this kind of fraud has already taken place in some places. So more caution is required,” said Dr Prabhu.
