Sullia: Unique flying Travancore squirrel sighted in Western Ghats

Sullia, Oct 8: A unique flying squirrel was sighted in Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

The creature which has been identified as Travancore flying squirrel is said to be one of the smallest flying squirrels that exist in the Western Ghats.

The squirrel measures only about 32 cm in length and is one of the unique species found in south India.

In Karnataka, there are two varieties of squirrels - one is an Indian giant squirrel and the other one that has sighted now is identified as Travancore flying squirrel.

The Travancore flying squirrel which was believed to have become extinct has been found in the Western Ghats of Kerala, according to biodiversity researcher Manjunath Nayak.
