Osama Shares May 1 Death with Hitler

New Delhi, May 2 (IANS): Not just their notoriety, Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and German Nazi fountainhead Adolf Hitler also share the date on which their death was announced -- May 1.

The official announcement of the death of the world's two most hated personalities in the last 100 years came on the same date, enjoying a rare commonality that can only be defined as a quirk of fate.

Osama bin Laden's death at the land of US troops in a special operation in Abbottabad in Pakistan was announced to the world by US President Barack Obama on May 1 at 11.35 p.m American time.

In the case of Adolf Hitler, the German Fuhrer (or leader) considered to be behind the mass killing of nearly 60 lakh Jews in Europe, Germany made public his death through a radio news broadcast on May 1, 1945, at 10.30 p.m. German time.

The two deaths are separated by 66 years. Hitler's reign of Germany lasted 12 years and three months from 1933.

Osama's run with jihadi movement lasted 32 years since he joined the Afghan resistance in 1979 against the then Soviet invasion before he turned his attention to fight the US in the 1990s.

His outfit Al Qaeda master-minded and executed the Sep 11, 2001, attack on the twin World Trade Center towers, using hijacked commercial planes to ram into them that left 3,000 people dead.
