Faced with house demolition, Bengaluru couple threatens self-immolation

Bengaluru, Oct 12 (IANS): Amid the anti-encroachment drive, a couple on Wednesday threatened to set themselves ablaze in a bid to prevent the BBMP authorities from demolishing their house here.

The BBMP has been carrying out the drive against properties encroaching stormwater drains (SWDs) in Bengaluru.

According to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials, the house had been identified as encroaching upon the SWD during the recent survey and a notice had been served to its owners.

The incident took place in the KR Puram locality where the couple, Sunil and Sona Singh, reside.

The couple, who are private firm employees in the city, poured petrol on themselves and threatened to set themselves ablaze when the BBMP officials reached their house which allegedly encroached a SWD by two metres.

The police and the BBMP officials splashed the couple with buckets of water and also used water hoses to spray water at high pressure. The couple were detained by the KR Puram police for a brief period of time.

According to the local police officials, the couple were distraught as they had constructed the house by availing a loan and were in the process of repaying it.

Ever since heavy rainfall resulted in massive flooding in some parts of the city in September, the authorities have been following up with anti-encroachment drives against constructions blocking the SWDs.

If their property docs are legal then directly accuse and book BBMP commissioner to the court of law

BBMP should be taken to court and made to pay through their nose for doing a very bad job over the years. All the properties they set out to demolish have all the documents issued by BBMP. Registration of property done by BBMP, and 6.65% of the property value collected by it. Yes, it is illegal, but who gave permission? Without proper compensation, even an inch of concrete should not be even kissed at, let alone demolishing it. All those officers who signed on those documents in return for money, should be made to pay through their nose, whether they are in service or retired. On the other hand, bring reservation 100%, you will only see more of it, because those getting reservation have law on their side. They have to just file a harassment case against anyone, non-bailable warrant can be issued as per constitution.

BBMP... Bruhut Bakshanaa Mahaguloom Paalike. Shameless since inception. Corrupt irrespective of which Party in Power... Bring all culprits to book. Give these poor people alternative accomodation instantly at the cost of corrupt officials. What nonsense is this? Where are these people to go?? Looks like Tamashaa to the officials now. It isn't. Put yourself in the shoes of these people and see.

Is the house not registered by the govt competent authority with proper documents???… How is that BBMP collecting property taxes from them?. How is that water and electricity was supplied???. Then how the same authority can demolish the house illegally without adequate compensation and reimbursement of all fees, taxes and charges with interest with new place of dwelling agreeable to this family????…..

instead of harassing such people, it will be more of a deterrent if the state seizes properties of the authorities that sanctioned the building plans and reallocates it to those that encroach on the drains.

When the house was being constructed, someone in the BBMP would have noticed it, why was the unauthorised construction not stopped at that time. Action should also be taken against the officials who allowed the construction in the first place..

instead of demolishing the poor people house, demolish the house of the government officials who gave the permission to construct the house, or pay the compensation so they can purchase the new house.

The Middle class and poor are harassed -- House Taxes are collected -- Power sanctioned etc. etc. -- Then all of a sudden innocent-- their lifetime savings are demolished---- officers and State should made to pay a price -- ALTERNATE ARRANGEMENST TO BE MADE -- All sanctions happen because of bribes -- which the final owners are not aware -- many are with bank sanctions -- Banks will only ask repayments -- Today from deep slumber officials wake up and act only on poor -- for publicity -- ----------each official has crores of individual assets -- earned by Bribes -- THERE ARE VERY many high-end software parks// residential apartments other constructions -- are in the natural water flow paths -- RAJA KALUVE etc. etc. -- They are causing maximum damage to natural -- water flow -- Many owned by Politicians or their associates -- and DARE not demolish --
