Udupi: Drivers get jail terms for causing deaths of pedestrians

Udupi, Oct 13: The first additional CJ and JMFC court of the district has on Friday, October 7, sentenced Dinesh Nayak (45), a goods vehicle driver to two years and six months of imprisonment. 

The court also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 for negligence in driving and hitting Gopal, a pedestrian who was standing in front of Ganesh stores on the Barkur-Brahmavar main road on March 28, 2017, that led to Gopal's death.

A case in this connection was registered at Brahmavar police station under crime No. 77/ 2017 section 279 and 304(A) IPC. Brahmavar police circle inspector Srikanth K had submitted a chargesheet to the court.

The same court. has, also sentenced tempo driver Umesh Poojary, a resident of Kundapur for hitting a bicycle being driven by R Ramanand Rao from behind. The driver was on the way to Udupi from Brahmavar on October 18, 2017 when the accident occurred.

The accident had occurred at a little distance further from the Manjunath petrol station, Herur grama. Ramanand fell on the road and suffered critical injuries on his leg and head and died without responding to treatment on October 23, 2017.

A case in this connection was registered at Brahmavar police station under registration No. 298/2017 section 279 and 304(A).

The court, has, on September 27 sentenced Umesh Poojary to two years and six months of imprisonment and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.
