Hijab row: Final verdict is very important, says CM Bommai

Ballari (Karnataka), Oct 13 (IANS): The final verdict on the hijab row is very important as its impact is not restricted to Karnataka, but for the whole country, and we must wait for it, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Thursday.

Talking to reporters in Huvinahadagali here, he said the court was seized of the Hijab controversy and the Supreme Court bench has given a split verdict - with one judge backing the ban and the other quashing it.

Bommai said that he will give his reaction only after going through the judgement.

"There were a lot of dimensions for the hijab row. The demand of students is different and the government order is different. Since it involves national and international issues, the government is expecting a clear verdict from the court," he said.

Education Minister B.C. Nagesh stated that they welcome the Supreme Court verdict. "We will wait till the final order. It was expected that the verdict would honour the liberty of women. But, a different verdict has come," he said.

"The government will wait for the final order. Until then, there is no provision in Karnataka government schools and colleges to practice any religion as per the Education Act. The government and other schools will run as per the act," he said.

The Hijab ban will continue in Karnataka, the minister added.

"Until the final order is made, we will ensure status quo in the state. There is no provision to display religious symbols," he said.

He maintained that the apex court would uphold the verdict of the Karnataka High Court. "That does not mean I am speaking against the Supreme Court," he stated.

On assault of RSS workers by some miscreants in Haveri, CM Bommai said arrangements had been going on for last one week and those who went to see the procession route were assaulted. The police have arrested 20 persons in this connection.

Appointing a 2-judge bench was a tactical error (perhaps deliberate to buy time). It appears that religion has played a part in the decision of both judges - not sure if one is a Hindu and the other is a Muslim judge). As a minimum there should have been a 5-judge bench - with no religious leanings.

Hijab is a head scarf worn with uniform .. Not to be confused with burqa .... Sikhs wear traditional dress ..meaning head gear .. likewise other communities with respective uniforms.. Key point is liberty .. freedom of choice ..

They claim forced religious conversion of Hindus by Christian missionaries and by Muslim heads . And the BJP government is implementing whatever they wish by force. All sections are united to ensure that Hindutva logic is imposed on minorities or el they are anti Indians.

Absence of firm/clear verdict by the Apex court itself prove a point that Karnataka High Court's decision is in haste & frivolous.., primarily a tight slap on the Jumping GODI & Cheddi gang.., that being said... Thotte Giraki's will welcome it as their - ತೊಟ್ಟೆ ಸಂಭ್ರಮ ಹಾ ಗೂ ಸಡಗರ will continue..,

Head scarf is okay outside the class and even full face closure with only vision opening... But in the classes all are equal and there can be no religion... Much is done for vested interests and nothing else... This is a rank non issue that has created a lot of nonsense... Only lawyers are laughing all the way to banks...

A trivial issue -- an issue about headgear -- harmless -- personal choice -- blown out of proportion -- enormous money spent and needless discussions --TV etc etc it shows how desperate this Govt is -- Govt institutes are run with taxpayers' money -- This issue is in Govt institutes not private -- (TAXES Direct and indirect -- so even if one buys soap taxes are paid -- Thus poorest pay taxes)-- They could have had a 3-judge bench instead of 2 -- Then it would not have ended up with this situation -- No vision -- no jobs -- all round failures -- Karnataka is sinking -- last 2 years --

So the red threads tie on hands, Red powder on the forehead, all this freedom will disappear once the verdict comes out. So bad. I know its a common practice like Hijab etc. One rules for every one.

For several years issue the Hijab issue has kept coming and going. Depending on who was in power the Hijab was enforced, or taken off. If the Hijab has to go off permanently then this should happen prior 1) The Literacy rate of women in that particular country should be 100% 2. The country MUST enact laws giving equal rights to women. 3. Industrialization should take place and woman should take on high level jobs and earn as much of man. 4. Theocratic rule should be a thing of the past 5. Woman themselves should be motivated to see changes taking place.
