Three eminent singers of Tulunadu Ravindra Prabhu, Anitha Samson and Khalid Tannirbavi were honoured with the titles ‘Tulunada Gaana Gandharva’, ‘Tulunada Gaana Kogile’ and ‘Tulunada Beary Mutthu’, respectively, at the valedictory ceremony of ‘4 the Super Singers’ a karaoke music competition at Town Hall here on Tuesday May 3.

The event was organized by Capman Media Makers, Mangalore and Mangalore Sangeeta Abhimanigala Samiti.

Ravindra Prabhu has been one of the most prolific singers in the coastal districts, widely known for his S P Balasubramanyam songs. Prabhu, who has presented over 4,000 musical shows in India as well as in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and other places, is an entertainer par excellence. He currently runs 'Raagrang' musical troupe, with well-known singers from Mangalore.

Anitha Samson, hailing from Bela, Kasargod, is a muscially qualified singer, and has done her BA in music at the prestigious Sandesha Lalita Kala Academy, Mangalore, and is also a trained Bharatnatyam dancer. Known for rendering classical and eastern music, she has presented over 2,500 shows all over India, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait. An MA holder, Anitha is currently a lecturer in a government college in Mangalore.

Khalid Tannirbavi is a popular singer in the Beary community and is well-known for in the field of Beary music. He has presented several shows around Mangalore.
 
Haidar Parthipady, president, Tulunada Aikyatha Vedike presided. Sadananda Shetty, president, Shree Devi Trust felicitated the singers and said that motivation is the key for achieving success.
 
B A Mohammed Ali, assistant engineer, NMPT in his keynote address said that it was a unique programme as nearly 105 singers were brought together on a single stage and entertained music lovers of the city throughout the day.
 
Earlier, emerging singers of the district Prathiksha KP, Rashmi Naravi, Rajesh K and Pradeep Acharya who won the ‘4 the Super Singers’ were given a chance to speak on the occasion.
 
Competition topper Prathiksha KP of Kasargod, pursuing her MSc in physics from NITK Suratkal, said that the credit for her achievement goes to her parents. Third place winner Rashmi Naravi doing her first year BE said that she learnt singing by listening to it on TV and radio. She also said she would join music classes which she could not afford earlier due to financial constraints. Rajesh K from Belthangady, who is doing rubber tapping in Karkala said that there is a lack of opportunities for singers of rural areas and expressed his happiness on securing the fourth place in the competition. Pradeep Acharya, native of Hosangady who secured the second place said that he leant music by singing Bhajans at temples.
 
Speaking to Daijiworld.com one of the contestants Tejaswini who is in the 7th standard in Noble School, Kunjathbail said that she started singing from 2nd standard. She has performed in various stage programmes in the city. Another contestant Mohammed Althaf, a welder in Bunder said that he had stage fear earlier, but his mother Fathimathul Zohara motivated him to sing. He has sung Kannada and Hindi songs in various places like Udupi, B C Road. He started singing just 3 years ago, he said.
 
Another contestant Chandrashekar Puttur said music was his hobby. He is also a theatre actor and artist.
 
The event was organised to mark the silver jubilee of Capman Media.

There was a rich display of Tulu, Beary and Konkani musical cultures at the end of the evening, showcased by the respective language academies.

Palthady Ramakrishna Achar, president of state Tulu Sahitya Academy, Narayana Kharvi, president of state Konkani Sahitya Academy, M B Abdul Rehman, president, state Beary Sahitya Academy, Sucharita Shetty, former ZP president, Chandrahas Rai, registrar, Tulu Sahitya Academy, Shivarudrappa , registratr, Konkani Sahitya Academy, Umarabba, registrar, Beary Sahitya Academy, Sara Abubakker, writer, Hussain Katipalla, editor of Nilavu monthly, M G Rahim of Capman media, Ravindra Rao, senior branch manager of Karnataka Bank, V Nagendra Baliga of VNR Gold, Bantwal were present.
