Puttur, Oct 17: A Grama Panchayat in Puttur taluk has attained self-sufficiency in power by adopting solar energy.
The Aryapu Grama Panchayat has taken the lead to harness 5 HP of solar energy by installing solar panels to pump water instead of using electricity.
There are 88 houses in the ward without adequate water supply. Onus was on the grama panchayat to ensure supply of drinking water to all the homes. Every day, water was supplied to all homes using electricity that entailed a monthly expenditure of Rs 23,000 towards the payment of power bills.
With the adoption of solar energy by installing solar panels the panchayat has been able to save the expenditure of Rs 23,000 that it was incurring on supplying water through electricity.
The panchayat has spent Rs 3.9 lac on installing solar panels and has resumed supply of water to homes. In summer or during monsoon, two hours of sunshine will suffice for running the solar panels.
