Kanimozhi may be Sent to Jail on Friday, May 6

New Delhi, May 6, DHNS: DMK’s Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, who is likely to be sent to jail on Friday as an accused in the 2G spectrum allocation case, said on Thursday that she would fight the case legally and ''come clean.''

“I am prepared to face the worst,” said the daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

“I do not expect leniency because I am a woman”, Kanimozhi said here while bracing up for a likely jail term.

The 43-year-old DMK leader has been named as an accused in the CBI’s second charge sheet on the 2G case which specifically mentions an illegal transfer of Rs 200 crore to the DMK-owned Kalaignar TV channel in which she holds a 20 per cent stake.

Her step-mother Dayalu Ammal, who holds 60 per cent equity in the channel, escaped the CBI’s probe as she apparently had not participated in the functions of the company.
The court has asked Kanimozhi to appear before it on May 06. Until now the CBI has opposed bail for all those accused in the case.

‘Serious charge’

The MP said it was “a very, very serious charge” and she was very sure that “we will come out of it and I will come out of it clean.” Kanimozhi’s mother is reportedly camping in the national capital with her to extend her moral support.

Former telecom minister A Raja, already in Tihar Jail, allegedly gave away 2G spectrum licences at throwaway prices in 2008 to companies that did not meet the eligibility criteria.

He has been accused of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy. Kanimozhi is understood to have lobbied for Raja’s place in the Union Cabinet as telecom minister after the 2009 electoral victory of  the UPA.

Five executives from Swan Telecom, Reliance Telecom and Unitech Wireless are also in Tihar jail.
