Dengue patient in UP dies after allegedly given Mosambi juice instead of plasma

Prayagraj (UP), Oct 20 (IANS): In a bizarre incident, a dengue patient in Prayagraj was allegedly given sweet lime juice instead of plasma, and reportedly died.

A video allegedly exposing a fake blood bank unit from UP has gone viral on the social media. It has been shared on the social media by a local journalist.

To the unversed, both plasma and mosambi (sweet lime) juice 'look' similar.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said that a probe into the incident was underway and a test report was expected soon.

"Strict action will be taken against those found guilty in the case," he said.

Meanwhile, taking a view of the rising dengue cases, the state government has restricted all UP doctors and paramedical staff from taking leave.

The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday directed the Municipal Corporation here to apprise it of the steps taken for the control and prevention of dengue. The Lucknow Bench of the court also asked the state government to inform it about the upgrade of medical facilities.

what a tragedy! I had gone through the same scenario, way back on the eve of India's Independence, at Wenlock hospital where I was admitted for typhoid. I was in a delirious state asked the orderly to give me something to quench my thirst. Sweet lime juice and lotion which looked alike had been kept side side by side in a similar bottle, and the orderly mistook the latter for lime juice, and gave me to drink. I protested, realizing it tasted differently and the orderly tried to force it in, and then I immediately vomited. I would not have lived to write these setences if something in me told me to throw up! The mistake would have been too late to discover. This must have what been the case here - and believe me, there are hundreds and thousands of cases every year not just in India but in other countries where such mistakes occur, and simple precautions in differentiating drinks could save lives. Blame the management, who else; not just the orderly nurse.
