Vendor Video Row: College Girl Accuses Mumbai BJP Chief of Outraging her Modesty

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, May 6 (with IANS inputs): Around mid-April, Facebook and other social networking sites were abuzz with a video showing a chaat vendor in Naupada's Bhaskar Colony urinating into a utensil with which he used to serve his customers.

Less than a month later, the girl who shot the video, 19-year-old college student Ankita Rane, has accused a BJP chief of outraging her modesty in a public speech, according to a report carried by The Times of India (TOI) on Friday May 6.

Ankita Rane                           BJP chief Raj Purohit

The video had created quite a storm, leading to the arrest of the guilty vendor, followed by smashing and bashing up of other vendors of street food in the city. It jolted the health department from its slumber, and gave a rude shock to the millions of street food lovers in the city. However, the vendor was let off with a fine of Rs 1,200 and a warning.

Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam held a hygiene camp for street food vendors after the incident.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) went on a rampage attacking north Indians who had paani puri and bhelpuri stalls in Mumbai and Thane. Over 300 stalls were vandalized, reports TOI, in protest against the guilty vendor.

Now, Ankita Rane has lodged a complaint against BJP Mumbai unit chief Raj Purohit for allegedly outraging her modesty by making remarks against her in a public address at protest rally by the Azad Hawkers' Union last week.

The complaint was registered in the presence of MNS legislator Bala Nandgaonkar.

According to reports, Purohit had questioned the authenticity of the sting operation and had asked why Ankita was spying on "an old, sick man" urinating.

"Go and see, even the women in the redlight areas would not do such a thing," Purohit said in a public meeting last week in Mumbai, questioning Ankita's motives.

However, Purohit also called it a conspiracy against him. "Since the civic elections are round the corner, it's a conspiracy against the BJP and me, just to create news. My party and I respect women. If I have hurt a woman or some women, I feel sorry for it," Purohit told TOI.

However, he did admit that he felt it was 'improper' for a woman to photograph a man urinating, and said that one man's guilt cannot be applied to others and it would be wrong to paint all the other vendors with the same brush.

"If a police inspector, the late Arun Borude, had raped a 15-year-old girl, the entire force cannot be held responsible for it," he said.

He condemned the attacks on the stall vendors by the MNS, and tendered an oral apology to Ankita Rane and also promised to tender a written one after a couple of days since he was out of Mumbai.

Over here we are not talking about poor sanitation.
We are talking about would any one like to be served in a vessel used to pass urine?
We don’t – that is why Ankita Rane shot this video to protest.
I am surprised some people support this act. BJP is really a party with a difference.
    Jai Ho BJP!!!!!

Which woman is treated as God? In India many women burnt alive by in-law's in dowry issues. Rapes are going on in moving vehicles. Many women commited suicide along with their young kids throwing themselves into the well ocz of husband assault/harrasment.

There is no doubt it is highly embarrassing for any girl to do such an act. It is understood she was compelled to do it in order to alert the public as well as the authorities. I don't understand why Mr. Raj Purohit is bent upon making it a political issue? Instead of passing unwanted comments on the girl's modesty he should have advised those illiterate street hawkwers about the importance of hygiene and health. Now Mr. Purohit please don't make it a national issue.

There is one thing good about India, "Freedom to live the way we want and Freedom of Speech". I have been seeing and hearing politicians abusing each other even to the extent of using foul and filthy language. It happens in all political parties. But it took me by surprise that the Party Chief of a main political party could stoop to such level of outraging the modesty of a woman/girl. His words has no connection to the issue which the girl took up. There is also another person NN who has lost his mental balance just like BJP Chief. Today BJP are in doldrums in Many parts of India of their Nero and autocratic type of rule. Whatever issue they raised against the present ruling party has hit them back so badly that they are into hiding. It is true that we have a weak prime minister in the midst of crooked politicians but still he is doing a good job. Whereas the BJP is involved in crushing the minorities and they are miserably failing. They have no issues to discuss or talk about and that is why they targeted this poor girl who was least interested in politics. She did her duty as a honest citizen. How many toilets has BJP constructed for their party workers or the slum dwellers. One does not have to be in power to construct toilets. The amount of money they spend on electioneering if they build 100 toilets in a day nearly 1 lac people can use it. They will not do it as they are not in power but they will rattle their tongue.

These same BJP members openly support the shameless actions of thugs like Ram sene. So how can you expect them to respect women and the main question is how does Raj Purohit know how the women of red light areas behave?

Henry, Mumbai is no where compared to Delhi, UP & Bihar in crime records related to Citizens. I am from Mumbai and I know how this City has changed from 1980's to now. Mumbai was not so dirty then, that it is now. You should thank Mulayam Singh, Mayavati and the great Lallu Prasad Yadav. If they were honest in their duty and have created jobs there, no need for these so called NORTH INDIANS to come to Mumbai. Earlier days most of the TAXIS are run by Mangloreans that's why Mr. Qudros A Manglorean is in that Union leaders chair. Today Mumbai taxi's are stinking & you hardly find any Mangloreans driving taxis now a days in Mumbai.

I salute the young lady for showing the courage for exposing the dirty practice of the Paani Puri vendor. She alerts the thousands of street food lovers on the level of hygiene standard of food like these sold on the streets. One should appreciate Ankita Rane's attempt as a social cause. Mr. Purohit, wake up man, keep away the politics. this is the social issue and instead of felicitating her for a job well done, you are trying to outrage her modesty.

Question to Mr. Nagesh, would you and your family consume the food being served using one of the utensils that was used for passing urine. Yuk....Be sensible while commenting. Anything you drag Congress and criticize it and praise BJP for whatsover it does. You are indeed highly biased.

It seems that Raj Prohith a senior politician, and BJP stalwart of Maha, while adressing public lost his mental balance and outraged modesty of womens particulary, the one who shot to fame,Ankita Rane, for her sting operation intentionally. The issue now gone out of control by involving major political parties which undermined the seriousness of envoirnmental health/hyegenic issue.Politicians don't want solutions instead they could go further raking the issue beyond control and out of context .BJP must come out with statement, disowning Rahj Prohith's statement and tender unconditional apology to Miss Ankitha Rane in particular and womenfoks in general. The issue reminds ,ex minister of Karanataka, Halappa's sex scandal episode in which BJP Karanataka not expelled him from the party. Therefore BJP's stand on women's issue is exposed in both cases.jai hooooooo bjp.
