Inspired by Hazare, JD(S) Launches Movement to Turn Heat on CM

Bangalore, May 6 (PTI): Apparently inspired by Anna Hazare's anti-corruption crusade, Opposition JD(S) in Karnataka today launched a "people's movement" targeting the BJP government led by B S Yeddyurappa over alleged corruption, nepotism and favouritsm.

Gandhian H S Doreswamy inaugurated a rally at Freedom Park here marking the commencement of the "Janandolana" aimed at turning the spotlight on the allegations against the Yeddyurappa government.

JD(S) leaders said the campaign was an "apolitical movement" to give vent to "people's ire" against political corruption.

JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H D Devegowda sat among the audience braving scorching sun while a couple of leaders of Left parties and litterateurs and Doreswamy addressed a motley crowd.

Gowda is leading ''Jatha'' -- proceeding in a convoy of vehicles and addressing rallies at some places along the way -- from here which would culminate on May 9 at Shimoga, the home district of Yeddyurappa, where a huge rally has been planned.

Similar ''Jathas'' are being taken out from some parts of the state, including from Basavakalyana in Bidar district led by state unit president H D Kumaraswamy and from Chamarajanagar led by another leader H D Revanna.

They would culminate at Shimoga on Monday for the "mega rally".

Doreswamy, a highly respected freedom fighter, made a passionate appeal to keep the movement apolitical setting aside party affiliations.

"Rooting out political corruption should be a top priority", Doreswamy said, blamed it for the "ills facing the nation."

He bemoaned the role of money power in elections and said politicians were deploying graft money to lure voters and win polls.

He said the movement should result in "concrete action" against political corruption.

Gowda, who later spoke from the dais, said legislature, executive and judiciary were on the "decline" and held politicians responsible for the "falling standards".

"It's possible to improve things only through people's power. People''s movement is very essential", he said.

JD(S) leaders maintained that the movement was driven by writers, litterateurs, artists, progressive organisations and the party was part of the initiative.

The party launched the movement on the birth anniversary of Basaveshwara, a revered 12th century social reformer and philosopher of Karnataka.

JDS leaders and others in the party seem to be ignorant about Anna Hazare.Probably they think he is another unsuccessful, corrupt & jealous politician like them. Even
though they might have the valid reason to protest but they are unqualified to do so as they are bankrupt with moral values.Actually this drama is an INSULT to great patriotic personalities like Anna Hazare.

Kurt, I completely agree with you. These kind of movements will spread and succeed only if they are started by truely apolitical and honest leaders. Justice Hegde would be one of those in Karnataka. But these people of JD(S) are not less corrupt than the current government. They are just riding on the coattail of Anna Hazare.

It is wonderful to learn that more and more Indians are inspired by Anna Hazare's anti-corruption crusade and launch new movements like a "people's movement".
It is extremely important to make people from all walks of life aware what legal rights they have got.
Social movements against corruption shall spread to every city and village all over India and create legal and peaceful actions against corruption.
Corruption is a hindrance and no democracy can grow and work.
Anna Hazare has opened the eyes of Indians especially of the urban middle class.
Lots of influential people attending the protests and by showing the determination to eradicate or to reduce corruption in India India´s government had to give in and in the near future the LokpalBill will be passed in India´s parliament.
After passing the LolpalBill it should be applied and implemented as soon as possible in order to commence to eradicate corruption.
Poor Indians need equal rights to get access to primary health care, schools, learning English, without having a high command over English it is harsh to find a well paid job in India.
Education is the key factor for the downtrodden and India without corruption will create a working democracy and hopefully offer a better life for the poorest of the poor.
India can only play an important role in this century by giving the poor opportunities to improve their standard of living.

    Best regards
