Kundapur, Oct 28: More than 15 PUC female students who took part in Kotikanta Gayana programme held at Gandhi Maidan here on Friday, October 28 fell sick and admitted to a hospital.

About 20 girls had fallen sick due to the 11 am harsh sunlight. The students belonged to Government PU College, Kundapur.

The sick students were tended and 15 of them were admitted to the hospital and drips administered to them. It is alleged that their parents were not informed till the afternoon though the incident happened in the morning. The college teachers too were not in the hospital.

The students could not write the examination held for them in the afternoon. It is said that they have an examination on Saturday also. The Kotikanta Gayana programme was held in the scorching sunshine of the Gandhi Maidan. It is said that the programme could have been held in the morning instead of the afternoon.

There is widespread anguish against the negligence of municipal council, taluk administration and the college.

Forcing children to attend such, motivated, functions in the hot sun (there has been a sudden change in climate with the sun blazing) without any headgear, overhead protection or provision for some hydrating liquids is a condemnable act; those who organize such gatherings should be taken to task!!

The 'Koti Kanta Gayana' programme was conducted by the Kannada and Culture Department. The whole goal of the organizers seems to have been to proudly declare: "Over a crore people participate in 'Koti Kanta Gaayana' across Karnataka. Don't the school/college students have no right to remain absent from them?

These students would have been made to stand in the harsh sunlight for hours before and after the event. Some may not have had their breakfast properly. Else, so many wouldn't have been affected.
