Mangalore: Atrocities on Christians - Delegation Petitions President of India

Mangalore, May 10: A delegation comprising retired judge of Mumbai and Karnataka High Courts, Justice Michael Saldanha, and general secretary of Mumbai-based Catholic-Christian Secular Forum, Joseph Dias, met President of India, Pratibha Patil, and Vice President, M Hamid Ansari, drawing their attention to the alleged atrocities being committed on Christians in the country, and about the sense of insecurity they are suffering from, because of these incidents.

Both the President and Vice President expressed deep concern about the said atrocities on minority Christians, and promised the delegation to make everything possible within their control to stop them.

The petition alleges that Hindutva forces have been falsely implicating Christians of engaging in religious conversions, and torturing them. It also says that Christian women and children have also been suffering harassment in the hands of these forces. The delegation has also drawn the attention of the President and Vice President that over 1,000 cases of atrocities and harassment had occurred between 2007 and 2011 in different states.

Justice Michael Saldanha said that Vice President, Hamid Ansari, promised the delegation to visit Karnataka in near future. He was addressing a press conference held here on Monday May 9. Joseph Dias, People’s Union for Civil Liberties president, P B D’Sa, Prof John Cutinho, and Joe Louis were present at the press conference.

    Not necessary that we like or support what the other says but give me one example where Nagesh Nayak called for a harmonious living ? He is ready with his attack on UPA, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandi and Christians no matter what is the topic in discussion. Several times he was challenged to bring to the fore one forced conversion to which he did not respond. Behaviour like what he has displayed up here on Daijiworld will invite harsher treatment than a hate page.

    You may remember to what extent Indians hate Sania Mirza they even hate a name Sania. Similarly, people will come to a situation of hating anything that sounds similar to his name.

    important person in the Daijiworld.

    The great majority of the Hindu
    population in India will not
    agree with you, but a few people
    are blindly repeating after some
    of the trouble-making and blood
    thirsty politicians of India.
    Since you are an educated person,
    I wonder, why you keep this deep
    rooted dilike towards the minorities, especially the
    Christian community?

    Suppose, you are stranded in the highway, and I stopped to give you
    a ride. On the way to your final
    destination,
    if I kept you hungry, mistreated you and finally tried to dump you
    in a forrest with a stern warning
    "if you won't accept my religion,
    you are out". That is forced
    conversion.

    If I took care of myself and you
    were ignored with a direct warning
    to change your religion to get my free food-
    "that is an inducement".
    I toally disagree with the above
    methods.

    All good and bad actions of life
    are being done, either by a godly
    or evil spirit.

    I gave you food on the way with love and
    finally took you home safely:
    naturally, you will ask me " you
    stranger, why did you do that
    charity"? I will say very openly
    that my God taught me to be a
    good Samaritan to the strangers.
    Many people are following Christ
    because of such unexpected
    encounters in life. That is not
    forced conversion.

    My friend, one day you may be forced
    to know more about Jesus Christ
    because He is unique in birth,
    death and resurrection. God

    Mr. Nagesh, as far as doing something good for India, I feel the Christians have contributed a lot towards the growth of today’s India. It is people like you instead of writing nonsense comments should act to build a prosperous Nation. The least you guys can do to this great nation is abide by the laws of this land rather than taking them into your own hand and making it another Somalia or Afghanistan.

    Some boys were playing foot ball. While playing the foot ball the party of the boy whom the ball belongs to started to loose the match. Instead of continuing the match to the end the boy started to say over and over again "the ball is mine I will take it home".

    This the same thing we see here, Many might have started to follow Christianity by looking at the social serving the Christians do to the needy. Rather following the example of Christisns and doing good work for to the needy and winning the hearts of many some Hindus promote violence against Christisn saying that this is Hindu nation and it is belongs to us and you Christians are not from our land, you are forceably converting Hindus to Christianity.

    Dear Nagesh Nayak - I have been seeing from a long time that you bear a lot of hatred towards Christians and Conversions, may be because you're misinformed or have had a bad experience with one/few Christians (exceptions are there in all religions).

    We're all born in the religion that our parents gave us we had no choice. You continue to be a proud Hindu and I continue to be a proud Christian and have not converted Ourselves (Note: conversion is self determined and can never be imposed) but many Hindus, Muslims and equally Christians too may not prefer to continue so, as life's experiences draw us to different faiths. Singer Yesudas is a famous Christian who converted to Hinduism. Forced conversion is a myth as adults always retaliate force, by police complaint etc. Coerced/Bought Conversion is a bigger myth as people can easily switch sides if it is all about money. In any case, Census shows decline in % from 2.6 in 1971 to 2.3 in 2001

    All I can say is when seen from far, missionary activities might seem to be driven by vested interests, maybe hard to believe in Kaliyug. But there are good sadhus, imams, and also priests/nuns who work for service to humanity and not with intention of conversions. Again, Conversion is self determined and cannot be enforced & happens everyday in every religion. Neither you nor I can force a person to stay in his/her religion of birth. That would exactly be Forced Religion and is true for everyone, incl a Christian trying to convert himself.

    Some of the weird politicians of
    India had no genuine political
    mandate to present, so they found
    an easy mandate to harass and intimidate the defenseless minority
    Christian community of India.

    There are Hindus all over India as
    the majority, but the attacks
    took place mainly only in BJP led states
    of India, which gives a clear
    picture of the political mystery
    behind the attacks.

    Among the five BJP led State
    governments of India, few attacks
    are taking place in four states
    but in Karnataka, the government is
    giving all the indirect motivations to attack the minority
    Christians.

    Christianity came to India 2000
    years back, still it is only 3%
    of the population.

    The Federal Governemnt of India
    must pass a new law to punish
    the attackers of the minority
    religions with greater punishment,
    to stop the attacks of the jobless
    street goons upon the Christian
    community.

    Justice Michael Saldanha, and general secretary of Mumbai-based Catholic-Christian Secular Forum, Joseph Dias met India´s President Pratibha Patil, and Vice President, M Hamid Ansari in order to draw their attention to the alleged atrocities being committed on Christians in India.
    The President and Vice President showed their concerns about the atrocities on minority Christian.
    Christians are a minority in India and all minorities enjoy constitutional rights in India. They are protected by India´s constitution.
    More than 1000 cases of atrocities and harassment have occurred since 2007 in various Indian states against Christians.
    This is unacceptable to Christians in India.
    Everything must be done to enable that they can live in a peaceful and stable environment across India.
    Perpetrators who commit crimes against Christians must be punished immediately.
    Minorities must have the right to live in harmony and peace especially in a democracy like India.

    I am very thankful to you Mr. Saldanha for your untired work after your retirement from Govt. sevice. If other catholics follow your footsteps who are retired from their service, definitely there would not have such problems to the christians. Let God give you enough strength and health to continue to work for the benefit of christians who are suffering from some saffron leaders. May God bless you on your endeavours. Please follow up the issues you are fighting with the Central Government.
