Sydney, May 10 (IANS) The man who hurled his shoes at former Australian prime minister John Howard has died. Before he died of cancer, he sought that his shoes be auctioned to raise money for the Red Cross.

Peter Gray, 30, threw both his shoes at Howard on live television to protest Australia's involvement in Iraq, AAP reported.

The incident took place during an appearance on the ABC's Q&A .

"That is for Iraqi dead," said Gray as he lobbed the shoes. The shoes did not hit Howard.

Gray died last week from bowel cancer. Before his death, Gray asked ABC to auction the shoes.
