Dubai : Man who Jumped off Burj Khalifa an Indian National

Dubai, May 12 (PTI):  The man who committed suicide by jumping off the world's tallest tower, Burj Khalifa, has been identified as an Indian, the Consulate General of India here confirmed on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old, who jumped off the high-rise on Tuesday, was identified as Athiraman Kannan from Tamil Nadu and Dubai police is investigating the circumstances around his death.

A statement from the Consulate General of India said, "An Indian national, Athiraman Kannan, fell from Burj Khalifa and died on May 10, 2011. Thirty-eight-year-old Kannan was from the state of Tamil Nadu and was an employee of Arabtec, working as a cleaner in the building".

Dubai Police had said on Tuesday that the man jumped from an air vent on 147th floor and landed on a terrace at the tower's 108th floor.

The consulate said investigations on Kannan's death are currently being undertaken by the police authorities.

"The Consulate is in touch with the concerned authorities and will extend all assistance in sending the mortal remains to his family after completion of the required formalities," it said.

This is the first recorded suicide since the building was completed last year.

Sorry to say this, but Indians are susceptible to suicide (anywhere in the world) for some strange reason, just like diabetes which affects Indians the maximum....strange, but true.

One does not hear much of Africans or people from other countries (except India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh), commiting suicide however hard their life is.

Mr.Alexander..My comment stands on Khaleej Times English Daily report.Ref:11/05/2011).Such a thing is common everywhere when employee is not getting leave, especially in Indian Army where soldier either kills himself or shoots his officer .Minimum 10 to 20 soldiers die in a year in India.

I feel pity at people’s ignorance and with that ignorance they want to write something and show that they know everything. Sad to hear about the Suicide by Mr. Kannan at Burj Khaleefa Structure and I feel more sad because the fate played on him, as he just lost his wife back in India in an accident. Dear Readers, we are fortunate that we are living in this country and we see and read at least news that is happening around us in UAE in the news papers and internet. Just imagine the life in other Middle East countries, where the press and internet media is controlled. There are several expatriate people die at the construction sites, due to accidents and several hundred are languishing in these Jails. What about them? Do you get to know our Indian expatriates being uted in Saudi Arabia for the criminal acts they have committed? I hear a big No from you guys…

Come on, please refrain from commenting on the things of which you have no knowledge. Do not speculate things. It is a fact that Mr. Shetty has explained the reality in this forum and which is matching with the version of Dubai Police. Why would Dubai Police term this as a suicide wrongly? What benefit would they be getting out o f this? Things to think about guys. We are the first one to jump in to conclusions without having to bother to find out the truth.

Since I am working for Main Contractor at Burj Khalifa Project Site, I strongly deny the wording - the man had requested a holiday but it was refused. In deed man approached our Site In-charge for emergency leave and verbally approved for his leave and asked him to fill up the leave application for further process, instead he went up to 148 Level removed his safety shoes, kept his duty note book aside and jumped to his death shattering dead body in several parts spreading on various places.

At this stage of final handing over job since there is no work pressure, we have no reason to deny leave for any one. He was working with us since from September, 2005, went on annual leave for 32 days in Jan’ 2011 and resumed back on 12th Feb’2011 only

Person Late Mr. Athiraman Kannan was hailing from Melapungudi, Sivagangai District, Tamil Nadu and he was just 38 years old, would have celebrated his 38th Birthday on 07th June. Unfortunately few months back only he lost his wife back at Tamil Nadu due to some Site accident where she was working as a construction worker

Since he was very good at work and working as a Foreman leading his Team of 25 workers he had access to all Terraces at higher level

For sure this was a working cleaning vent. Secondly this is not the first one to die in this tower. Many have lost lives during construction. Do we consider them as suicide? An Indian does not have to go to Burj Khalifa to commit suicide and that too low profile guy. Think about it.
