BTP to contest Gujarat polls in alliance with JD(U)

Bharuch, Nov 7 (IANS): The Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) led by Chhotu Vasava will contest next month's Assembly elections in Gujarat in alliance with Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United), leaders of both the parties announced here on Monday.

Surprisingly, the announcement came a day after BTP leader Vasava issued the first list of its 12 candidates.

Vasava told IANS that after primary talks with JD(U) state unit leaders, the BTP decided to contest the polls in alliance. He added that within the next two to three days, both parties will work out as to how many seats to contest along with the seat-sharing formula.

JD(U) state unit President Jitendra Singh also confirmed the alliance with BTP with IANS.

Vasava also said that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will campaign for both the parties' candidates ahead of the elecetions.

In May, BTP had in principle agreed to go for an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), but it didn't work out in the end. In September, Vasava had told IANS that BTP will contest the elections alone in all the 27 reserved seats for tribals.

But when the first list of 12 candidates was announced, it included two general category seats -- Jambusar and Olpad.
