Moodbidri, Nov 10: An accused in an attempt to steal case spent the maximum prison term that would have been pronounced by the court as an undertrial. He was granted bail after three years and two months.
Puneeth Shetty had attempted to steal at Savira Kambada Basadi here on July 1, 2019. The matter came to light the following morning to the staff of the Basadi as they saw six broken locks. A case was filed by the trustee of the Basadi.
Police arrested thief Puneeth after a month and produced him in the court. It is said that he was suffering from mental illness and had no one to take care of him. So no one tried to secure bail for Puneeth.
Panel advocate of legal services authority Ananda K Shantinagar and lawyer Venugopal had moved bail application on behalf of Puneeth as he was well known in Moodbidri vicinity as he was mentally ill.
Though bail was granted, no one came forward to give security on behalf of Puneeth. Puneeth’s advocate said that his client has already spent three years as undertrial, which is the maximum sentence that would have been awarded for an attempt to steal case. So the case will be closed only if the accused confesses doing the crime in court.
