Udupi, Nov 17: Shirva police arrested four thieves who used to rob gold from jewellery shops by posing as customers.
The arrested are identified as Shanabella B (45), Mohammed Ali (32), Ashur Ali (32) and Ganesh Kumar, all natives of Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu.
Police have confiscated gold bars weighing 28.882 grams and 26 grams the worth of which is Rs 1.49 lac and Rs 1.17 lac respectively and a bike.
Two strangers who were speaking in Malayalam and Tamil had visited a jewellery shop in Shirva town on June 6 in the guise of customers and had stolen a golden necklace weighing 28.79 gram costing Rs 1.49 lac. When the owner of the shop checked on CCTV, he came to know that the necklace was stolen by the strangers who arrived in the guise of customers. Accordingly, the owner of the shop had filed a complaint with Shirva police.
The police traced the mobile number of accused Shanabella who was residing in a lodge at Mangaluru. As per the mobile tower location police went to Dindigul, Sampati, Puncholai and collected mobile location and found out that the accused is in Ullal.
The police raided the lodge at Ullal and interrogated all the four accused. It was unearthed that they had stolen golden ornaments from Jewellery shops at Shirva and Moodbidri.
Shanabella, one of the accused, had sold the stolen ornaments to a jewellery shop at Chinnalapatti in Tamil Nadu and the money was equally shared among the four. A case was registered in Moodbidri police station also.
The accused were produced in court.
