Bangalore: BJP Battles Bhardwaj to Save State Government

Bangalore, May 16 (IANS) The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka seems set to take to New Delhi its battle against Governor H.R. Bhardwaj for reportedly seeking the government's dismissal and direct central rule in the state.

The BJP legislators are meeting here Monday to decide the strategy to save their government.

They are likely to opt to present themselves to President Pratibha Patil in Delhi to prove the party has majority in the assembly.

The legislators meeting will be followed by a cabinet session of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa who late Sunday wrote to Patil to reject Bhardwaj's "unconstitutional move".

Bhardwaj has not made public the "special report" he says he has sent to central government on the Karnataka developments following the Supreme Court restoring the membership of 16 rebel lawmakers May 13.

Of the 16 legislators, 11 are from BJP and five are independents.

The rebellion in October last year had reduced Yeddyurappa ministry to a minority in the 225-member assembly and Bhardwaj had ordered the chief minister to seek trust vote.

The 16 rebels were disqualified ahead of the Oct 11 trust vote which helped Yeddyurappa win it amid chaos in the assembly.

Bhardwaj ordered another trust vote which Yeddyurappa won Oct 14 with 106 votes in favour and 100 against.

Of the 11 BJP rebels who won back their membership, 10 again expressed their support to Yeddyurappa Sunday while the 11th refused to do so.

The 10 waited outside Raj Bhavan late Sunday to hand over their individual support letters but Bhardwaj did not meet them.

He, however, met a group of ministers after which BJP spokesperson and former central minister V. Dhananjaya Kumar announced that Bhardwaj had "accepted" the support letters, indicating Yeddyurappa had survived the crisis.

However, the jubilation in the BJP camp was short-lived as the ruling party apprehended that Bhardwaj had quietly sought dismissal of the Yeddyurappa government and imposition of direct central rule, keeping the assembly in suspension.

It was Dhananjaya Kumar who told the media that Bhardwaj was possibly seeking dismissal of the Yeddyurappa government, within an hour of claiming that the governor had "accepted" the support letters.

Following the apex court restoring the membership of the 16 rebels, Bhardwaj, an advocate and a former central law minister, seems to have gone by the situation that existed after the 16 withdrew support to Yeddyurappa and before their disqualification.

But BJP's contention is that Bhardwaj should go by the numbers the party has now and not on the basis of the situation that would have existed if the 16 rebels had not been disqualified.

The BJP says that with 10 of the 11 party rebels again extending support to Yeddyurappa, the party has 120 members, including the speaker, in the 225-strong house that has one nominated member.

The party also has the support of one independent legislator.

It will now be a case of 'over to legal experts' - to argue and advise President Patil for and against Bhardwaj's action, in case he has sought dismissal of Yeddyurappa government.

Politically, however, the reported move of Bhardwaj would be a boon for the beleaguered Yeddyurappa.

The BJP, including the increasing number of dissidents in the party against him, will now have to rally behind Yeddyurappa in spite of charges of corruption and illegal land deals hurled at him.

Sir Satish Kunder, Mangalore/Kuwait congress is always hunger for power. To be frank from day one they did not allow present state govt to rule peacefully. They were always busy in pulling the legs of the state govt with their unneccesary protests each and everytime. I agree that there were scams reported in BJP, but it's very less when campare to scam happened in congress. So in this present situation it's better to go for BJP.

Honestly, do you people think, any of these present govts(BJP,Congress,JDS) would sincerely work towards the development of the country or the State????......personally, i don't find any reason left to say yes. Fight against corruption is the need of the hour. We want a government which works towards the development without any selfish motives. We want a government which supports following valuables:

    * Fight against corruption
    * Fight against terrorism
    * A government that does not support communalism
    * Protects & Supports the minority, poor and downtrodden.
    * Supports all citizens equal under law
    * A govt that totally concentrate towards the development of the country

At the present scenario, i feel none of these govts(BJP,Congress,JDS,..) have the capability to do this unless there is a fundamental change in our constitutional law. So i humbly request the people, instead of supporting these selfish motivated governments, support for a good cause before it is too late....Please visit the following website to know more and act accordingly.

    Gentlemen,
The Governor's recommendation should be viewed from the perspective of the recent developments in Karnataka.
I agree on the face of it, it may look like a unfavorable bias to BJP.
But the fact is when the Speaker had disqualified the 11 or so MLAs while taking the floor test was grossly unconstitutional and the case went up to the highest court of the land.
Now that the Supreme Court verdict has come, the floor test conducted at that point in time is unconstitutional and consequently the suspended animation of the assembly is the right constitutional penalty for the alleged BJP government.
When the speaker disqualified the 11 or so MLAs he and the CM, indirectly violated the basic fundamental right of freedom of expression of the MLAs. Today it is with MLAs tomorrow it will be we the citizens.
The MLAs with this money might took so much time, money and effort to earn justice. Can a common man think about this?
I feel ashamed to be an Indian looking at the political drama going around.
The MLAs who rebelled created all the mess and now they are back supporting the BJP Govt. The court at various levels had to spend thier time on a priority basis to solve their drama rather than spending time on other important cases lying for years together. They have taken advantage of the judiciary and taken the citizens at ransom.Such crooks must not be spared.
I feel no party deserves to be at the helm in Karnataka and a President's rule is appropriate.

Dear Madhu, Bangalore, Mr. Paul never said the Petrol Price is higher in Mangalore only during BJP rule. I agree with you the price was higher during Congress rule as well. However, people opted for BJP with a hope of correcting the mistakes caused by other parties & you know what they got in return. Party leaders are busy in travelling from Bangalore to Delhi and visiting various temples by helicopters at the cost of tax payers money. Ofcourse the promises of BJP is much better than other parties - but, only on paper. "Barking dogs seldom bites". "Jo garaztha hai woh barastha nahin". BJP is a total disaster to Karnataka. BJP hatao, Karnataka Bachao.

Ofcourse governor is playing as cong agent. In fact this governor may play as indirect help to sinking yeddy.Previously most fooloish Devegowda allowed Bjp to come to power by destrying his own all formiddable janada Dal.

In anycase Its true Yeddy has manipulated the house to retain power by sacking 16 Mlas.It was a planned move taken with a fear of losing the vote.Good possibilty was there had they allowed them to vote Yeddy would have come down few months back. Since supreme court has comeout verdict against Yeddy its essential Yeddy & Government must immediately come down & resign before central sacks them. If you see past CMS like RK Hegde,Bommai,Nijaligappa they were all different from Yeddy.Yeddy will never resign and no principles.

As far as corruption is concerned its there in all partys & hence no need for Yeddy to resign on that matter.  Buying of MLAS from other parties by paying cores is another offense worked seriously against BJP government. Jaitly speaks big big things . If Jaitley is a big leader why he allowed State BJP to grow to this extent? hypocrites!

Yes, to retain the glory of Karnataka, the dirt should be washed away. BJP is nothing but goonda raaj. CM is praying to God to save Minister, a rapist, BJP leader storms into Police station to threaten Police for arresting dirty Belchada who illegally entered into neighbor's house when the lady was alone at home. CM cries & claims opposition has sacrificed a donkey to kill him and sleeps on floor with birth suit...What a party....ofcourse with a difference. Please Mr. Bhardwaj, save our beloved Karnataka from Goonda Raaj.

Paul - do you mean to say the higher price for petrol et al in Karnataka is only since BSY govt came to power? As far as I'm aware, this has been the case since long. I'm also aware of vehicle users sometimes crossing over to Hosooru(TN) to fill gas, just to save a few bucks.Let us have meaningful, balanced discussions, not be misled by some stray one- sided comments from co posters. Every time there is raise, it has cascading effect and it is a fact that the raise is politically timed by the Center( irrespective of the party that rules).

I feel if President’s rule is imposed, then BJP may get sympathy and the people may forget the misrule and corruption this government has indulged into.

Congress should not go into this misadventure but politically counter BJP. They have to patiently wait for their turn because people will revolt against misrule and corruption at appropriate time.

Governor decision has been upheld by the SC, stating acts of Speaker and CM are both shameful and unconstitutional. A unconstituionally functioning govt., has no business in being in power. This is despite the issue whether they have majority or not.
There is no bottom to the lows, this BJP govt/MLA's can go. It is also worthwile to note, the same BJP govt has even readied another bunch of MLA's to disqualify from other parties, to save themself of any eventuality. Therefore, Governors actions both are justified and need to be fully respected, if country or state comes first for any individual.

    dear nagesh nayak,
Regarding price hike for petrolium products, i think you are not aware that although we have refinary in mangalore, the petrol costs more in karnataka than other states .Its due to to higher excise duty (35%) imposed by your favorite state govt led by yadiyurappa. In this matter all are equal responsible including UPA also.

Nagesh . I pity on you & its your fate that you have always in your life remember the country Italy.

Everyday you have to remember that country even though you dont like that country & its your fate.

Why cant you think about India?
No one is there to listen from Italy & no one had a time to think about India from Italy. They are bussy with their own future & development.

Please think about India. Who looted India after independence & kept money in Swiss bank...? Its our own people & all our Hindu brothers & you know about this.

Let us solve our problems first & think about other country.

I will fully agree with you that the Governer Bhardwaj has done wrong thing. And some politicians trying to shake BJP Govt.

One of the ten dissident MLA,in SUVARNA TV 24x7,two days before used filthy words like -Yeddy will die in cancer,aids.......but surprise to see him saying YEDDY KI JAI.....yesterday!!!!

Shanker Linge Gowda BJP MLA still says he is abide by his earlier letter to GUV!

Six independt MLA says they are not making any honeymoon with BJP nor BJP want to make!!

The other day Ishwarappa,BJP chief has taken Guv for a task with out valid reason and makes threats to sign Assembly session request else .....even though GUV was in Delhi and in weekend days(Saterday-Sunday).

Whenever opportunity come to fore to critisize GUV, Ishwarappa and Yeddy's henchmans are taking head on against Constitutional head, the Guv frequently. Therefore Law expert HR Bhardwaj used his opportunity in a style recomnding Assembly suspension animation or President rule in Karanataka which is appropriate under the circumstnace in Karanataka's political senario.
