Mangalore: Criminal Activities in Dist Jail Exposed - Mobile Phones, Ganja Seized

Mangalore, May 18: Police on Wednesday May 18 raided district jail and seized two cellphone sets with SIM cards and two packets of ganja. 

The surprise raid was conducted in the afternoon. Seizure of cellphones made it clear that prisoners were regulating their criminal activities sitting pretty in the prison. 

The jail houses 253 prisoners in total which comprises 239 gents and 14 ladies. Apart from these 253, the jail has two children as inmates.

When asked on how mobile phones and ganja were available to criminals, the jail officials expressed their helplessness and added that they were mute spectators to what goes on in the jail as there is only one watchman. They confessed that the companions of prisoners throw ganja and mobile phones (from the other side of the compound wall) to prisoners as the jail is located very close to the main road in city. 

In all total staff strength of the district jail is seven including two lady staff. Though three vehicles are provided for the use of the jail staff, only one driver is recruited. 

City ACP Ravindra Gadadi with his 30 staff members conducted the raid.

    Prison system in India need constant review. The conditions of the Prisons and the treatment of prisoners also need close surveilance thru various volunteer groups that need to inspect the prison situations and come up with suitable guidelines. By so doing, we help the Government to reconsider their attitudes towards all those men and women that get incarcerated for one reason or another.

    We are very familiar with the Prison conditions in the United States. It is a very pathetic situation but the entire prison system is adhered to basic Human Rights governed by the Constitution. Jails and prisons are costly investments indeed but in order to protect safety and security of each citizen the laws and regulations of the jails, prisons, penitentieries, half-way houses and many other restorative justice systrems must be preserved at all times and under all circumstances.

    Indian jails and prisons need various selfless volunteer groups to emerge and render all kinds of mentoring, guiding and assisting, so that a progressive and systematic measure of recidivism is derived for the benefit of all those inmates who happen to commit a crime intentionally or otherwise.

    In a freedom loving country such as India, early prevention of crimes and timely assistance and treatment towards various anamolies is the best solution so that life in India remains to be an example to the rest of the world. The manner in which Japan proved during recent Tsunami is a classic example.

    Dear Langoolacharya,I think you are crazy about pubs and dance bars.People in India need primary requirements like food,shelter and education before jumping to pubs etc.Yeddy and his govt is doing something to it, but not UPA-2. Please understand.

    Mr. Jai Shetty, Mothers, sisters, wifes or any one is allowed to go anywhere ( including pub ) if its their wish. Its their Right. People are educated and aware of what they do. No moral policing should stop them.

    I am sorry guys this trend is not in Karanataka alone but all state's jail conditions are worse than ours.

    Jai Shetty Dubai,got annoyed as if the comments related to him by Langoocharya Belman/USA! He should think that India is not a banana republic,instead largest living democratical republic.Right to live,right to free movement are fundamental rights of Indian citizen so that obstructing for these rights by any invidual org is anti social and anti constitutional.

    It is very much essential to improve the amenities in the Mangalore Jail. The security and safety of the in mates and strict vigil is required to control the antisocial activities in the jail.The local politicians MLA's should look in to this and arrange to shift the Jail Buiklding to a safer place.     What's wrong in visiting a pub. if u want to drink alcohol, drink. else sip some juice or water. do the guys writing about sisters and mothers visiting pubs watch tv at home. eg. tv 9. they broadcast simple porno that too at prime time which corrupt the innocent minds, or the crap in the name of comedy. of course all you have to do is to change the channel. but why doesn't anyone regulate them. similarly you always have an option dear people. the choice is always there whether to visit the pub or to hit women and children/ or not.

    Once i visited this jail. no safety,
    i want to ask 3rd class politician this issue very serious. govt have to provide safety of police and and jail also. no proper road, there is no computerized records.
    all manual i big log book, if somethings happens wrong- then its very difficult to find who police and who is criminal, dear leader kindly take action, pls. provide 24 hours elect and water.
    instead of give tax money for temple kindly provide money for some enocent criminal. try to give good life. it's very easy to comment,

    Mr. Henry Misquith, who is the honest officer under BJP rule ? Somashekar ? Halappa ? Reddys / or their chief Mr. Yeddy ?Sometimes I wonder whether Mangalore is in Karnataka or in U.P. and Bihar. Within couple of years Karnataka has become a safe haven for criminals, smugglers, goondas, rapists, murderers, drug peddlers.....who could save us from this mess and when ???

    Good question Alston from Mangalore.. how do these mobile phone batteries get charged on a regular basis.. simple answer - the prisoners throw it back on the road and once charged it is thrown back into the prison. So much for prison administration. None of these road activities can happen without the active cooperation of the staff. This wall story was a good one to laugh at.
