Man self-immolates at home in South Delhi, five of family injured


New Delhi, Dec 17 (IANS): A 35-year-old man self-immolated himself in a room where the others, including a six-year-old boy and an infant, were also present.

Police said that all the five family members sustained burn injuries in the incident which took place in Fatehpur Beri area of South Delhi.

The man identified as Abhinay Gupta sustained 50 per cent burn injuries while his mother, Prashila Gupta, suffered 20 per cent. Both are undergoing treatment AIIMS.

According to a senior police official, on Friday night around 11:47 p.m, a police control room (PCR) call regarding a fire in a house and people being stuck, was received at Fatehpur Beri police station.

"A police team rushed to the spot. Abhinay Gupta, his wife Neha Gupta, Prashila Gupta and two kids, Rihaan (6) and eight-month-old Shivansh were to be found injured in the incident. All were sent to AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital," said the official.

"On initial enquiry, it was found that Abhinay poured Kerosene over himself and set himself on fire. He had an argument with his family members, who were present in the same closed room. Family members also suffered burns while dousing the fire," said the official.

Abhinay and his mother Parshila are admitted in AIIMS' Burns ward and remaining three persons were admitted in Safdarjung Hospital. Neha and her two sons suffered minor burn injuries on hands and legs.

"A crime team has been called at the place of the incident and further enquiry is underway," the official added.
