Mangalore: Malavoor Project - Water Supply to Begin by March 2012, says Palemar

Mangalore, May 24: District in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar and MLA Abhaychandra Jain on Tuesday May 24 visited the dam construction site of ambitious Malavoor multi-village drinking water project which was visualized a decade ago and said that water supply will begin by March 2012.
The dam is 206.50 metre-long with a width of 20.4 metre. The method of gate operation is mechanical, while the dams stores 2.4 metre of water.
The project is aimed at supplying drinking water to 11 villages under seven gram panchayats namely Bala, Malavoor, Padushedde, Kenjaar, Bajpe, Moodushedde, Tenka Ekkar, Badagu Ekkar, Permude, Kalavaar and Jokatte by constructing a dam at Malavoor across Gurpur River.
Speaking to presspersons Krishna Palemar said that in the first phase, a vented dam will be constructed and in the second phase, jackwell will be constructed along with the treatment plant and pipelines for the supply of water. As of now the work is completed till floor level. Next step is erecting pillars. The work will be completed by Jan 2012 and water supply will begin by March 2012. He added the dam will store 26 cubic meter of water per hour and that the source of water for the project is permanent. He added as per CRZ rule the construction work is carried out with the government releasing a sum of Rs 10.5 crore.
Abhaychandra Jain said that the project idea was conceptualized in 2002 under Rajiv Gandhi Rural Drinking Water Project to construct a vented dam across Gurpur River at Malavoor to supply water to the neighbouring villages. He added that the sum of Rs 96 lac was raised from the gram panchayats and NGO’s also granted money.
The construction work is taken up by Mudrodi Constructions, Kavoor.
To a query district in-charge minister said that 69 km road has been constructed in the district at the cost of Rs 8.7 crore. The government has also released Rs 5 crore for each assembly constituencies in the state for de-silting of rivers.
