Quarrel between priests leaves Kerala cathedral deserted on Xmas

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 25 (IANS): The St Mary's Cathedral Basilica in the Ernakulam Angamaly archdiocese of the Syrian Catholic church wore a deserted look on Christmas eve as well as on Christmas Day on Sunday, as the two opposing groups decided that there would not be any mass there till the quarrel between them ends.

There were fisticuffs and fights between the two groups on Friday and Saturday. This was following a group of priests and laity wanting to conduct the holy mass by the priest facing the mass instead of the altar as directed by the Cardinal.

The fisticuffs ended with several people including priests getting injured and admitted to hospitals. The basilica is not closed but the two warring groups decided that no holy mass would be conducted until a consensus is reached on the matter.

The laity and priests supporting the mass facing the believers said that the altar of the basilica must be reconsecrated for the Holy Mass to be conducted there again as that the fight between the two groups had led to even the upturning of the altar.

A letter has already been shot off to the Vatican for intervention in the matter.

My view is that I wish to see the brighter side of the picture.... yes there were differences and fisticuffs between groups involving laity and priests (silly humans as we are)..... yet what is heartening is - good sense has prevailed and they have decided no Mass will be celebrated until we reach a consensus or reconciliation...... truly the faithful malyalis in the cathedral atleast seem to be wanting to sort-out things, a sensible approach atleast not to take Holy Mass for granted for petty egos, even after ugly fist-fights that have occured !

Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” (Matthew 7:21–23).

When two quarrel third gets benefit out of itBetter not celebrate mass or any other function in church. It gives other religion people to talk about and show finger to us ,like how good we are and problems. Why need to reconstruct new alter ?Even a table is enough with two candles and a crusifix.Like children it is.No wonder people wander to other place or religion.
