Mangaluru, Dec 27: In a tragic accident, an eighth standard student standing by the side of the road was knocked down and killed on the spot by a speeding and recklessly driven car. This accident occured in Ullal on Tuesday, December 27 evening.

Karthik (14), son of Boliar's Batrabail resident Harishchandra and Arunakshi is the deceased. He was a student of Mudipu Government Primary School. The boy was standing by the roadside after school when the speeding car on the way to Mudipu, hit him. The car also collided with a nearby auto rickshaw. Excessive speed is said to be the cause of the accident. The incident reportedly happened when the car owner gave the car to his friend for trial.

The car driver, in an attempt to overtake a bus that had stopped in front, hit the rickshaw and road barricade before knocking down the school boy. The boy who suffered critical injuries on his head, died on the spot.

The local residents have been urging for speed breakers on the roads to curb excessive speed of vehicles in front of schools and colleges. The irresponsibility of officials has caused the accident, alleged the people who gathered at the spot.

Mangaluru traffic police arrived at the spot and registered a case.
