Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jan 5: Locals rescued 30 people, residents of apartment building situated opposite Kandavara gram panchayat at Bajpe, as fire was noticed due to electrical short circuit in electricity meter board.

Around 9.45 pm on Wednesday January 4, thick smoke engulfed the basement area of the building and quickly rose to higher areas. Only when the smoke reached top floors, the residents started screaming for help. Locals rushed but could not bring the inmates of the building. They immediately contacted Apathbandhava Rafiq of Gurpur, who rushed to the spot and rescued all 30 people along with the help from locals.

As the meter board was burnt mobile torches were used to bring the people out from the flats. Clothes were tied around their face to prevent breathlessness. Even then, some of the residents experienced breathing problem, but they recovered later. Smoke covered the whole building till late night.

Police visited the spot and inspected the area. The apartment building is 10 years old and has 21 flats. However, when the fire mishap occurred, there were people only in six flats.

With no strict norms in place to escape in case of fire this is bound to happen. I wonder how many skyscrapers in and Mangalore have dedicated fire escape mechanism in place! In case of fire in a tall skyscraper, I doubt whether the local fire brigade has the equipment or training to douse the fire or rescue people; in such circumstances, a big tragedy is waiting to happen!!

Appartments look posh but the actual carpet area ( the useful area) is 30( not 40%) smaller than that is mentioned. The maintainance charges are high and we spend more than required for real maintenance, also there are more than one "flat owners associations" which are many times managed by thugs. Earlier in Ahmedabad I stayed in an independent house for 52years and now in Mangalore for 13 , also in an independent house- no regrets esp. after hearing horror stories about cheating and murky liftmen and "security personnel " . In a city like Mumbai it may not be possible to have an independent house but in Mangalore it will still be possible for some time to come.

Thank God no loss for lives. We humans have many plans but God has always have his own plans. Nowadays people die in many ways that we never think. Sometimes with our carelessness and sometimes others careless.

Better to stay in a small independent house rather than appartment complex. The risk of fire, earthquake, high maintenance charges, water leakage from top, too many neighbours ( many fighting cocks) etc

Absolutely correct Monty Dotor. Some of the buildings are not safe as well. Some no proper drainage facilities etc. It is better to have independent house.

staying in independent house is not safe...especially if a person is old or sick...apartments in that context are much better for elderly people...

Kujumaji. I am old (not sick), I stay in a small independent house. Good relations with neighbours (but no love or jihad with neighbour) I lock the gates so that no one can enter. There is also a puppy - padosi ka kutta (no reference to any politicians) in my neighborhood, who howls at strangers and sometimes barks at me.In an appartment there are many people who move about and we may not recognise many outsiders who visit. Also if the toilet of the person above leaks....in an appartment , it will be more troublesome than the person who peed on a passenger on a New York to Delhi flight yesterday.

A small flat in a small building with open air surrounding and only basic facilities is also a good proposition as the maintenance will be very less rather than building huge independent mansions with 4-5 bedrooms, and ultimately one old couple to stay as most of the new generation prefers to settle abroad; these mansions are very tough and costly to maintain; also very much difficult to get a buyer and mostly have to be distress sold by the children settled abroad through dubious brokers! Multitude of such mansions, both old and new, and farmlands are available in and around Mangalore with no buyers!
