Udupi: Fishing boat hits rock, five fishermen rescued, Rs 30 lac loss reported

Udupi, Jan 6: A fishing boat hit a rock in the middle of the sea and all five fishermen on board were rescued.

Swarnagauri boat owned by Bhaskar M Puthran of Badanidiyoor had left the Malpe fishing port for fishing on the night of December 30. When it was carrying out fishing at eight nautical miles distance from Kaup on January 3, it accidentally hit a rock and water started gushing inside the boat as the plank got damaged.

Tandela of Swarnagauri boat sent information to Varuna boat that was fishing in nearby waters. Fishermen on board Varuna boat rushed to the rescue of crew on Swarnagauri boat and saved all of them. However, the boat that hit the rock could not be saved.

Six sets of net, rope, drum winch, engine and 2000 litres of diesel got washed away in the sea. The loss is estimated to be Rs 30 lac.
