Reddys' Rise: Riding Cycles to Rattling BJP Leadership

Reddys' Rise: Riding Cycles to Rattling BJP Leadership

By V S Karnic

Bangalore, May 31 (IANS):
From struggling businessmen who could once afford only bicycles to now owning choppers and almost bringing down Karnataka's chief minister, the Reddy brothers have had a meteoric rise in both riches and political clout.

And the three brothers continue to cast a large, dark shadow over both Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national leadership.

Their alleged illegal iron ore mining and exports are a cause for frequent disruptions in the legislature of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, where their father was once a police constable.

The Reddys' wealth - there is no clear estimate of it - comes from the billions they raked in from exporting iron ore after they entered the business in 2002 by floating the Obulapuram Mining Co (OMC). Obulapuram is in Andhra Pradhesh though OMC's main office is in Bellary, the iron-ore rich district in Karnataka, about 300 km from Bangalore.

OMC is mainly owned by G. Janardhana Reddy, the tourism minister and the most vocal of the three bothers. The elder, G. Karunakara, is revenue minister while the younger G. Somashekara is an assembly member from Bellary.

Janardhana Reddy has also floated Brahmani Industries Ltd to build south India's biggest steel plant at Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh.

Kadapa is the stronghold of late Andhra chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and his family, with whom the Reddy brothers allegedly have business relations.

The timing of the brothers' entry into the mining and export business was perfect as demand for steel hit the roof worldwide, fuelled mainly by China building facilities for the Olympics.

Politically too their timing was unmatchable. They, perhaps, have to thank the Congress and its president Sonia Gandhi for it.

Contesting the Lok Sabha polls for the first time, Sonia Gandhi chose Bellary as a safe seat as she and her party were not sure of her victory in the Gandhi family stronghold of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh then.

The BJP fielded its firebrand leader Sushma Swaraj to take on Gandhi in Bellary and the Reddys worked for her. Since then they always refer to her as their 'thayi' (mother) and proudly declare "we can never say no to our thayi".

Gandhi won both seats and retained Amethi, giving one more opening for the Reddy brothers and the BJP to turn the Congress fortress into a BJP bastion.

Sushma Swaraj claimed recently that she had no hand in making the Reddy brothers ministers and that other senior leaders such as Arun Jaitley and M. Venkaiah Naidu were looking after Karnataka affairs.

The Reddys' clout in the BJP, particularly in Karnataka, clearly comes from the billions of rupees at their disposal.

They were instrumental in mustering a majority for the party to form its first government in the state and southern India in May 2008. The BJP won only 110 seats in the 225-member assembly.

The Reddys won over five Independents to support the party, giving it 115 votes in the house. All the five independents were also rewarded with cabinet posts.

The Reddys are also believed to have bankrolled the party's "Operation Lotus" -- making Congress and Janata Dal-Secular legislators to quit their seats and contest as BJP nominees in the by-elections. This helped the BJP to gain a majority on its own - 119 members.

They rebelled against Yeddyurappa in 2009 as he did not give them a free hand to choose the officials to be posted in Bellary and in their ministries.

They refused to budge even after pleadings from Jaitley, Venkaiah Naidu and others.

While their 'thayi' Sushma Swaraj papered over the differences, Yeddyurappa had to pay a heavy price -- dropping his close associate and lone woman minister Shobha Karandlage from the government and shunting out trusted officials from his secretariat.

The Reddys do not shy away from showing off their wealth. They own latest SUVs and choppers.

The Reddys have been taken to the courts over alleged illegal mining in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Interestingly they don't own any mine in Karnataka but are accused of large-scale illegal mining in the state.

Following a petition by an NGO, the Supreme Court has ordered a survey of the mineral-rich areas on both sides of the border of the two states to determine the extent of illegal mining. The Reddys have been charged with erasing boundary marks between the two states to camouflage their illegal activity.

Janardhana Reddy has strongly denied any illegal activity and says: "Wait for the court verdict. We will be proved right."

My assets are over Rs.1,000 crore, Reddy once said

Mining baron and Karnataka Tourism Minister Gali Janardhana Reddy once boasted that his assets are worth more than Rs.1,000 crore.

He had taken exception to an opposition member's comment that he and his two brothers - Revenue Minister G. Karunakara Reddy and assembly member G. Somashekara Reddy - are worth only over Rs.100 crore.

That is typical Janardhana Reddy - aggressive and ambitious, exercising cross-border clout across Karnataka and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh where their father Chenga Reddy served as a police constable.

The money power comes from the billions of rupees from iron ore exports and political influence from proximity to senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj and the family of late Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR).

Janardhana Reddy's boast shows the brothers' actual assets will remain in realm of speculation, in spite of whatever they declare to election officials and income tax authorities.

Janardhana Reddy has declared he is worth over Rs.150 crore, that includes a gold chair worth over Rs.2 crore.

That is pittance, compared to what the brothers gifted to Hindu gods in the last three years - a diamond studded crown estimated at Rs.45 crore to Lord Venkateshwara at Tirupathi and diamond-studded ornaments and gold-woven clothes costing around Rs.15 crore to Srikalahasti temple, both in Andhra Pradesh.

His two brothers, the elder Karunakara and younger Somasekhara had over Rs.50 lakh (Rs.5 million) in cash just ahead of the May 2008 assembly elections, which they both won, according to the affidavits they filed with the state election office.

And the three brothers are constructing a house worth Rs.10 crore in their political base Bellary, the iron ore rich district in Karnataka bordering Andhra Pradesh.

Even Janardhana Reddy's educational qualification is not free from controversy.

The BJP website as well as the Karnataka legislative council portal give his qualification as SSLC (Secondary School Leaving Certificate), which is equivalent to 10th standard.

But the Bramhani Industries Ltd he floated in 2007 to build south India's biggest steel plant in Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh says he is a commerce graduate.

Kadapa is the stronghold of late YSR's family. His son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, who quit the Congress and floated the YSR Congress, recently won the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat in a bypoll by a record margin of over 500,000 votes. Jagan, as he is popularly called, is said to be Reddys' business partner.

Brahmani is a subsidiary of Obulapuram Mining Company owned by Janardhana Reddy.

Janardhana Reddy, 44, is a member of the Karnataka legislative council. His wife G. Lakshmi Aruna is a director of Bramhani Industries and is described by the company as "guiding strength in all her husband's endeavors". The couple has a son and a daughter.

Karunakara is 49 years old. He and his wife G.Vanaja have two sons. The declared assets of Karunaraka family are over Rs.15 crore.

Somashekara, 43, is a post-graduate in commerce. His wife is G.Vijaya and they have two sons. Their declared assets are over Rs.10 crore. The couple owns gold jewellery of around 2.3 kg valued at over Rs.27 lakh (Rs.2.7 million).

Janardhana Reddy may be neck deep in controversies, but he started off the business saga with a firm, ironically named, Ennoble India Savings and Investment Company Ltd when he was 21.

It folded up after a few years but set the Reddys on a path to riches and political power that has the country's second largest party squirming about its association with them.

    Dear Dr S Kamath, Mumbai

Nobody is questioning legal mining and legal mining export. If anybody is earning by legal means there is no problem with that but the problem here is illegal mining by these looters from Bellary. Moreover they are using official machinery in their illegal mining. They have destroyed boundaries between Karnataka and Andhra including demolition of a temple with the ulterior motive of looting Karnataka with Andhra license. This is just unacceptable. CEC and Lokayukta have found evidence against these looters and indicted them accordingly. So what more you want?

I want to make clear to you that I do not have any vested interest against these mining looters but you defending them in this forum raise similar doubts. You have gone to the extent of appreciating their entrepreneurship and this is quite appalling. Do we want our next generation to come up in life by illegal and corrupt means?

Are you defending them because they are part of BJP? This type of looters does not have any party. They support BJP here and Congress in Andhra. BJP may find these looters as assets at present scenario but in the long run they will inflict serious damage to the party.

Just wait for some more time. These looters have to pay for all the sins done by them including massive illegal mining.

    Dear Dr S Kamath, Mumbai,

If you say so, then Raja, Kalmadi and Kanimozhi need not be in jail. Still there are allegations only and nothing is proved yet. You may be hardcore BJP supporter but have the courage to call spade is spade.

Irrespective of the party they belong it is necessary to bring all the looters and corrupt politicians to book. Looters and corrupt politicians are in all the political parties and we citizens should stand united against these people irrespective of our party affiliations.

These Reddy Brothers are worst than robbers and they have robbed our state with illegal mining (using Andhra license) misusing official machinery and this may be rare in Indian History where ruler himself using state machinery for his personal business.

Noose is slowly getting tightened on these Reddy brothers and hence even their so called ‘Amma’ has distanced herself by disowning them.

It will be a happy day for all Citizens of Karnataka when these illegal mining looters are put behind bars.

What is illegal? pay some fees and obtain permission. If a person has taxable income and don't pay the income tax, he is leading a illegal life. So, how may of you are leading illegal life????

Its only for the generel Public from open angle it looks like Reddy's are blessed as pillars of BJP in Karnataka. But the rise of Reddy's have an equal support fromt the center through late YSR as its because of Reddy's, the congress could lay a strong foundation in Rayalsema belt thus bringing YSR Govt to power in Andhra & even in Andra By-elections. The Reddy's are standing tall only after giving sufficient kickbacks to Center other wise they would have been perished by now. This is evident when we see how Yeddi started ignoring Reddy's after YSR's death as he thought then he is the only godfather for them, however he did not know that they had other means of support from center to survive.

Without the help of Reddy's Verrapppa Moiliey wouldnt have won in Chikkabellapur whic was proved in may media reports. Now as usual coverup, congress may end up in siding the Reddy's when the right time comes and hang CBI nooze around their neck if the Reddy's wont do their Job by being in BJP or outside. Because for Congress they have got number of such Reddy's all over country & abroad in the masks of Raja, Pawar, or Qwatrochi etc. Only time will detrmine Reddy's fate depending on the scenario of next assembly election's how the Reddy's will be used in favor of Congress or BJP.
