Mangaluru, Jan 13: The city police arrested eight people in three separate cases of drug trafficking.
A man who was transporting ganja in his car near Kuntikan cross in the city on Friday January 13 morning was arrested. The arrested is Vijaya Kumar Shetty (24), a resident of N R Pura taluk in Chikkamagaluru. Police confiscated 10.2 kg of ganja worth Rs 2.55 lac, a Maruti Swift car, mobile phone and Rs 500 cash. The total value of the confiscated goods is Rs 5.65 lac. A case in this connection is registered in Urwa police station.
Accused Vijaya Kumar was involved in ganja trafficking earlier also. He has cases filed on him in Chikkamagaluru and Udupi. He was released from prison just three months ago.
CCB police inspector Shyam Sundar, Mahesh Prasad, PSI Rajendra B, Sudeep and personnel were involved in the operation.
In another case, acting on definite tip off, CEN police of the city arrested three people for possession of charas and ganja.
The arrested are identified as Suketh Kava alias Chukki (33), a resident of Bajagoli in Karkala taluk, who works as tour guide, Aravind K (24), a native of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, who is a costume designer and Sunil (32), a resident of Pulkeri, Karkala taluk.
The accused used to procure prohibited narcotic like ganja and charas that is grown naturally on the hill station of Parvati Valley in Kulu district of Himachal Pradesh making the villagers believe that they are trekkers and tourists.
The ganja, thus obtained was brought in train and sell the same to businessmen and entrepreneurs in Mangaluru, who in turn used to supply them to students of prestigious colleges of Mangaluru as well as general public.
The CEN crime police confiscated 500 grams of charas and one kg of ganja, a car used in transportation and mobile phones. The total value of confiscated goods is said to be Rs eight lac.
In one more case, four people were arrested for transporting ganja on December 26. The police seized 32.195 kg ganja from their possession.
The arrested are identified as Mohammed Naufal (24) and Mohammed Bathisha (37) from Manjeshwar, Zamzeer (24) from Malappuram and Mohammed Ashraf (42).
The accused were transporting ganja to Kerala. Ganja worth Rs 3,19,000, four mobile phones worth Rs 13,000 and a car worth Rs 3,00,000 was seized from them.
