Bangalore: 'Action against Ramdev Reminder of Emergency'

Bangalore, June 5 (IANS) Karnataka ombudsman N. Santosh Hegde said Sunday's action against yoga guru Ramdev in New Delhi brought back memories of the emergency clamped in the country in 1975.

"I am very sad. There was brutality there. It reminds one of what happened on June 25-26 in 1975," Hegde, a member of Lokpal Bill joint drafting committee, told reporters here.

Ramdev's hunger strike against corruption and black money stashed abroad ended abruptly in the early hours of Sunday as hundreds of policemen swooped down on the Ramlila Ground in New Delhi, removing him and dispersing thousands of his restive supporters with tear gas and batons.

"This is violation of fundamental rights of citizens," Hegde, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, said.

"People sleeping there were beaten up and brutality could be seen in the action," he said.

On whether he would continue to be on the Lokpal Bill drafting panel, Hegde said: "If other members say that the two (Lokpal Bill drafting and removal of Ramdev) are different and we should continue, I will," he said.

The panel consists of five civil society members and five central ministers. Besides Hegde, the civil society members are social activists Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal and former law minister Shanti Bhushan and his son Prashant Bhushan.

The panel was set up after Hazare went on a fast at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi in April.

Baba and Anna's movement has been the great successfull of the recent history. Corruption eradication is the need of the hour and current UPA is in neck deep corruption. The UPA is afriad of Anna type movement so arrested Baba. Congress is another name for corruption. BJP leaders are also NOT far behind. But no one can match Kalmadi and 2G scam!

    Dear Justice Hegde,

When government had agreed to all his demands what was the need to extend the fast? This government has shown visible actions against corruption and black money which no other government has done in the past.

By extending his fast and asking more people to join this man was creating law and order problem. Some report suggests that Sangh Parivar was working behind the scenes for bringing more people and trying to create a scene so that UPA government is thrown out. Moreover there were intelligent reports of Bomb threat by terrorist groups. Government of the day must have considered all these factors before taking decision to stop the 5 star satyagraha which lacked any sincerity. This man wanted to show that he has more followers than Anna Hazare and black money issue was only a publicity stunt. His interaction with media clearly exposed that he was even fooling his followers by sticking a deal with government (which might have included safeguarding his business interests).

I agree with you this could have been done at day time instead of early hours but this call must have been taken at top security meeting considering all factors. If somebody is thinking all people are supporting this type of agitation then they are living in fool’s paradise. Actual support can be ascertained only on electoral field and not agitations like this.

Hegdeji, I hope you must have commented in the same manner when our own Karnataka Government thrashed silent protestors against church attacks in Mangalore (giving the same reason of law and order problem)

I am pained to say here that the Baba and so called civil society leaders have exhibited their right wing leanings in all their actions instead of taking impartial view. I respect Anna Hazare for his Gandhian way of life but still there is lot of shortcomings in his personality. He supports Raj Thackaray’s hooliganism against outsiders specially Bihari’s. These Thackaray’s are more corrupt than anybody else as they collect protection money even from a poor vegetable vendor. Can your civil society group fight these goons who are directly affecting the livelihood of poor people?

There are also reports that Anna Hazare started his fast for Jan Lokpal Bill with particular Maharashtrian politician in mind but for the good support this got changed into a movement. Except Centre and Maharashtra, Anna Hazare does not talk about any others involved with Corruption.

Do you think with such hidden agenda in mind, this movement can be successful? Can Jan Lokpal Bill and stringent punishment can stop corruption and black money?

    People,

History repeats,,, this is what CONgress did on June 26th 1975 and paid a very heavy price in March 1977...Indira was herself defeated from Rai Bareli...

Now see what will happen to these Sonias,MANmohans, Pranabs,Kapils , Moilys in next elections....

Why they should be aginst bringing black money from Switzerland and punishing the accused by death if they themselves are not involved in this???

Even a child could understand this except my CONgress friends.....

    Jai Hoooooooooooooooooooooo

    Dear Justice Hegde,

Whatever action that the Police had resort to is not sufficient reason for you to step down. Your leaving the field at this juncture would mean a great victory for the people immersed in corruption. Please remain and continue to fight the battle. Only people like and Hazare who can be relied upon to to do away with corruption.
