Udupi, Jan 30: An attractive flying snake was spotted near Parkala market recently. The snake landed to the ground from a tree that was opposite a laundry shop located in the building that belongs to the city municipality.
The snake which is two-and-a-half feet long has white and black straps on its body with red coral like spots in between. The locals were scared thinking it as a poisonous snake.
Snake specialist Gururaj Sanil was contacted and he said that these snakes are non-poisonous. They climb to a height of 10 to 15 feet and jump from there to the ground. It is called 'Haaruva Haavu' in Kannada and Pulliputra in Tulu language. This snake is mostly seen in the Malnad region while they are rarely spotted in the coastal region.
