Bangalore: Barmaids to be Banned from Bars

Barmaids to be Banned from Bars

Bangalore, Jun 7 (DHNS):
No new licences will be given to restaurants and bars, discotheque dance bars or live bands in the City which employ women (barmaids) for serving liquor, according to State Home Minister R Ashoka.

“Whatever licences we have given will be reviewed and if any violations are found, we will see to it they wind up the business,” Ashoka said here after a “Chintan Baithak” with top police officers of the capital.“Bangalore will not go the Bangkok way. The City has a name for itself and we will go all out to maintain its sanctity,” he said.

Strict instructions

Addressing the newly posted Assistant Commissioners of Police in the City, Ashoka said: “I have given strict instructions that skill games, massage parlours and high-profile flesh trade and gambling dens will not be tolerated. Rowdies and underworld activities should be a thing of the past,” he said.

It was pointed out to the minister that some of the 11 outlets, which were earlier issued licences and had employed women to serve liquor, were violating the regulations by running live bands with scantily dressed girls who virtually seduce the customers. However, a section of the police officers present on the dais denied it.

But when a reporter cited the case of a joint on Double Road, the minister quietly handed over the microphone to City police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji.

Mirji said: “We are treading cautiously and are on the right path. We are abiding by the court orders and keeping a tab on the joints; if someone is found guilty, we will take adequate measures and stop it immediately.” He urged the public to inform the police about shady joints.

Ashoka said: “We have carefully handpicked the cops and I am confident the officers will deliver the goods. From now on, the ACPs will be held accountable and will be dealt with strictly if any untoward incidents are reported in their jurisdiction. The same procedure will be followed for the police inspectors postings.”

He added: “I will see to it there is no black mark and the government will be at the receiving end.”

    Dear Nagesh Nayak,
Which world are you living in ???. What can one expect from your poor taste of Indian politics, where you are unable to distinguish the essence of which political party is good for India. Corruption was always there in each Government since independence. The present UPA is having it due to Multiparty within its ranks. My point is the way you speak about the BJP, let me not say about them, as their ideology of functioning is to only destabilize the country. Coming to the actual point of our subject, Why should WOMEN not work where ever the need arise, do men have these boundaries, if not then let the women work and earn their living. Do we mean to say that our system is so transparent that we have no sinners anywhere else and come to say that women should not be allowed to work in Bars!!!. Nagesh to you I offer my deepest Condolences.

BJP and its 80's thinking will not only stop the development of the country , but it will push the state and country in such a low place , where it will be impossible to get it back on track. its already happening " bangalore is lost its charm , and soon gonna lose its ' I T ' crown as well.

Cheap thinking powered by cheap minded politicians .
@Nagesh - Why did the protestors stone the cops , its a non bailable offense . why did baba jump/run/hide like a girl . if he would have surrendered nothing would have happened . " if you dont have the capacity of safeguarding your protestors , then dont do it ". it would have been better if he would have calmly joined sushma for a track or 2 ..

Nagesh nayak. what culture you are talking about??? Beating innocent protestors in mangalore church attacks.. whats the difference between your bjp and delhi congress??? How about your mlas who camped in hyderabad and goa, didnt enjoy the company of women supplied by BJP cadres????? why Yeddy has to promote Shobakka... Hennu maye.... BJP members are not angels, they too have vices.. dont point your finger at others, first u do the introspection of self and your party members.... Anyway, barmaids are ok as long as they earn a decent legal earning... But under the pretext of barmaids, they should not be used for other activities.....

What about 5 star hotels. Don't women serve alchol there?. Why differenciate between those women and other ordinary women working in bars to earn their daily bread?. why take it for granted that all women working in bars are of loose character or prostitues? Crazy law really, in a democratic country when one small bunch of politicians who have nothing better to do impose their will on others. By preventing these women from working do you guarantee the end of flesh trade?.All over the world women work and serve in bars but only here stigma is attached to them working.

Right step, if followed but the powers that run these restaurants know all the loopholes. They will abide by the rules for few days, till things are forgotten. Why does the Police Commissioner urge the people to report about the shady joints? Is it not their duty to visit all the joints and find out for themselvs or are there too many joints that the police can not tackle?
