Mangalore: Volvo Bus Service to City Airport by July 15 - MP Kateel

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SB/DL)

Mangalore, June 8: Volvo bus service to the airport in Kenjar will begin by July 15, said MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.

He announced the decision while presiding over the Mangalore Airport Maintenance Co-ordination Meet after due discussions therein. There were elaborate discussions on development of basic infrastructure at the airport, land required for the extension of runway from the current 8,000 ft to 9,500 ft, setting up of police outpost, installation of streetlights for the safety of passengers and other steps that will help airport gain international status.

Nalin said that 150 acres of land had been earmarked for the runway extension and an estimated Rs 36 crore would be required for the acquisition of the same. The estimated cost does not include rehabilitation of the displaced, he clarified. The meeting also discussed the need to write a letter to the authorities of the department concerned with the provision of basic facilities to construct a proper road towards the airport.

It was also decided that the Mangalore City Corporation would supply water and undertake waste management as per the request made by Airport Authority of India director, M R Vasudev. The deputy commissioner gave instructions in this regard to the officials of the department concerned.

The meet further discussed transportation and maintenance of cargo through the old airport at Bajpe.

Additional deputy commissioner Prabhakar Sharma, superintendent engineer Balakrishna, assistant commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti, KSRTC Mangalore divisional controller PB Karumbaiah, regional transport officer M N Banavalli and tahsildar Rravinchandra Nayak among others were present.

I highly endorse the recommendations made by Mr. walter Lobo. While there are so many curves to the New approach Road which was made on collapsible muddy Hills. And now since some new Educational Institions hv been built on the said Hill, they are also not safe. Abt 5 years back during heavy rains, the Hill neaby the Institute was collapsed & the road was blocked for nearly 4 days.
If Volvos's go to Airport & vice versa during monsoon season, with the roads having steep curves & bends, Only God has to come to the rescue while negotiating these curves & situation like May 22, 2010, Air India Express should not happen.

Kateel need not go to the Airport to talk on facilities. The sewage system in mangalore is non-existe nt. Roads are not touched since it was first laid. An International Airport in Mangalore is a colossus WHITE ELEPHANT in the making when Bangalore International Airport can serve entire Karnataka and neighbouring states. What is this illeterate stone pelter talking about?

Somehow I like to the idea of having an overhead gondola ride from the new international terminal to the Kavoor Hill instead of the Volvo buses since the road to the airport is ill devised and can not negotiate turns, and potentially tragic conditions could previal. An over head gondola ride would be more scenic and would attract more people to visit, and actually add to the tourism of Mangalore. I recommend MP Kateel to consider this option and actually could save lives instead of killing passengers over the rolling hills with poorly paved unsuitable roads. Another option would be to use the old airport entrance and widen the road with direct access to the main terminal.

What a great idea to have Valvo service to the airport. My only concern is can that bus make the turns to go up the hill to the airport and down the hill to main road-with safety or should we see a bus rolling down the hill to the paddy fields of Marvoor? Take a good look at the road structure, I was scared to take a cab service through the exit ramp, the ramp is not even suitable for walk how can a bus driver manage the down hill? Please pay ttention to the public safety. Thanks

It is equally important to create a new state of art AC Railway Station close to the base of Deccan Park, below AI accident site and introduce Air-conditioned mini 1-2 bogy Electric shuttle-train between Udupi and Mangalore Central. Also introduce mini AC buses between the new railway station and the airport. Good luck!

Spot on Mr. Vincy - I have earlier highlighted in these coloumns the day light robbery by the contractor - Seems they have a stop watch - 2 seconds delay and you end up paying 60 Rupees ! Given the chaos at the airport a minimum period of 15-20 minutes is basic requirement and fair to all concerned. Wonder what criteria was used to charge this 60 rupees to pick up / a passenger specially when 2 flights land / take off around the same time.

If the idea is to loot the public - so be it - May the contractor prosper - he too may have paid a bribe to get this lucrative contract. Idea of VOLVO bus service is good - but I don't think it will really take off - unlike in Bangalore where they have point to point service with regular stops - anyway give it a try - it may have to run like the private city bus service - with stops at every "HOUSE"

Air-conditioned Volvo Bus service (Vayu Vajra) has been working very well in Bangalore. Every 10 minutes volvo buses commute between Majestic and Devanahalli airport. Good luggage room inside the bus and the fare is also quite reasonable. It really helps the passengers who travel from long distance.

I hope in Mangalore also Volvo bus service will function efficiently. This service should be extended upto Udupi/Kundapur as the fare for hiring a taxi to Kundapur will be more than airfare. At the same time carrying luggage etc., we can't travel by city buses which are normally jam packed.. some times difficult to even breath.

Request the authorities concerned to kindly note and extend this service upto Kundapur. Other than the air passengers, I am sure, there will be a lot of general passengers who would be willing to travel to Udupi/Kundapur

I fully endorse the views expressed by Mr. Vincy , Shamboor / Bangkok related to looting the general public on parking charges by Parking Lot Contractor of Mangalore Airport.

Though the columns of Daijiworld , I request the concerned authorities to extend the minimum duration beyond 10 minutes for charging Rs 60 as there is only single departure and arrival route for ping and picking up the passengers .

Well, sounds like good step. Again as already indicated by Sathish S, this will be another scam and the investigating parties should be on standby for next year's investigation. Richard, I support your suggestion. Why not buses on Udipi route. There are lots of passengers from that route (mulki, udipi, etc).

I think the contractors for parking lot are looting the general public on parking charges. They allow you only 5 minutes to off the passenger and if more than 5 minutes then you are charged Rs.60.How can you expect to the passenger with bags and that too with a regular trafic jam on that only single departure and arrival route.

This means Rs.24,000 for one cent of land. This is again duping the people. The land will be acquired by the Government through the respective agencies and people are getting a paltry sum. What is the market rate there? The people who have put in their heart and soul into the development of their land, should be paid at the market rate. Will anybody protest against this injustice to the people by the so called elected representatives of the people. Let not the Government and it's agents fool the people.
