M'lore: Traffic Affected as Embankment Collapses at Netravati Bridge

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (PS)

Mangalore, Jun 10: The collapse of embankment constructed at one end of the Netravati bridge severely disrupted the movement of vehicles on the national highway on Friday June 10.

The embankment at the other end of the left hand side of the Mangalore to Thokottu route collapsed. Navyug, a Hyderbad based company was carrying out the reconstruction work of embankment. While they had finished a portion of work at one side, the other side collapsed .

However the contract officials who were present at the scene refused to speak to Daijiworld about the cause of the accident.

Ullal circle inspector Manjunath Shetty and staff rushed to the spot.

Vehicles plying from both sides were stopped resulting in atleast 2 km of gridlock on the national highway. Heavy vehicles were banned temporarily.

Vehicles were stopped at Pumpwell and Thokottu by the police to avoid further traffic congestion. The work on repairing the bridge is being taken up. A bulldozer is being used to refill the vacuumed embankment with sand and boulders. However, as one part of the bridge is strong, vehicles are allowed to move one way.

@DEREK, BALAMATTA/ BOSTON whoever responsible for this NH works either central or state govt, but it's the public who are effected by this. For NH works it's the central UPA govt responsible and not the state govt. I will give you an example. Few days back there was a news in this website regarding fast work of udupi-suratkal NH four lane project. During that time most of the commentators gave the credit to central UPA govt. Now suddently when there is a defect in this NH highway bridge how can you blame BJP state govt and yeddy??

I will give you another example. Last time there was a news about Bangalore metro rail starting in the month of April in this website. During that time many commentators gave credit to SM Krishna for Bangalore metro rail. Suddenly few days after that there was a news about delay in the start of Bangalore metro. During that time commentators blamed yeddy BJP govt for the delay and not SM Krishna. So it's clear that some commentators comment according to the political parties whom they support and not on the basis of right and wrong. By the way in some cases if applies even to Mr Nagesh Nayak also.

@Nagesh Nayak a excellent comment from sounds really good.

    @ Varun Shetty
    Dear Varun

IRCON is the company that was awarded the Mangalore BC Road sector .(The fact that it messed up the 38 KM or so fourlaning is a matter that is still being discussed ). The Nanthur- Thalapady sector is the continuation of the KUNDAPURA- Surathkal four laning and that is being awarded to Navyuga infrastructure . They are also strengthening the existing Netravathi bridge. Hope this is clear.

Prem,Embankment shall be self supporting. For this "Pitching' has to be done, with proper slope, base support and as i commented earlier, 'weep holes', Look at the pic, the plastered portion below, has protruding tubes, which are nothing but 'weep holes. The same should have been present at top to ease the earth pressure created by the ingress of 'absorbed water'.
This is my guess, looking at the pics.

ullal bridge has a very old history of one being the strongest and longest of those days. Now what we see in the pictures are not the bridge but the reinforcement at the end of the bridge,of which the supporting boulders have being misplaced .It may be due to the heavy rains where the bottom gets blotted due to rain and river water.why are people getting panic so much?. The MEDIA sometimes reacts and publishes news matter and photograph's to panic the public.engineers and contractors in INDIA have their own RESPONSIBILITIES AS CITIZENS OF INDIA is what I feel........

TK, Kuwait what do you mean "mangalore has BJP govt " . First and foremost would like to inform you that mangalore is in india. Also when something goes wrong the congress support commentators will put the blame on BJP and if something happens good commentators give credit to UPA govt even though if the UPA govt is not involved that. Last time there was a news about the fast work of NH four lane project. During that some commentators gave the credit to UPA central govt, but now you are saying that BJP govt is ruling in Mangalore so they are responsible for this?
