Mangalore, Jun 11: As many as 250 students who achieved success in the state SSLC and PUC examinations this year were felicitated at a glittering ceremony at Town Hall here on Saturday June 11.

The ceremony was organised by Muslim Educational Institutions Federation (MEIF) and Minorities Guidance Forum (MGF).

Inaugurating the programme, chancellor of Yenepoya University, Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi noted that women in the Muslim society were the most backward, both financially and educationally, but of late the trend seems to be changing with more number of Muslim girls seeking education. He further informed that the Yenepoya Trust offers ten seats free of cost to meritorious students, five each in medical and dental streams.

Alva's Education Foundation chairman Dr Mohan Alva, who was the chief guest, urged the students to make the best of the opportunities available to them and stressed on the need for preparing for competitive examinations right from day one. He termed education as the panacea for the problems in society. He advised the students to practice meditation in order to do well in studies.

MLA U T Khader appreciated the efforts of MEIF and MGF in encouraging students by way of rewarding them for their hard work. He added that one may be born in poverty, but need not die so, and entreated the parents to support and encourage their children to pursue higher education, and offered to support anyone in need of his help in this regard.

Former state minister for higher education B A Moideen presided over the programme. He lauded the Muslim community for recognising the importance of education and even setting up institutions to further the cause of education. He added that harmony in society can be achieved by understanding the values taught by all religions.

There was also a seminar on the occasion by national trainer for Jaycee, Jc Rajendra Bhat, and head of the department of psychology, Roshni Nilaya, Dr Audri Pinto.

Among those present were state Beary Sahitya Academy president M B Abdul Rahman, MEIF president Y Muhammad Beary, MEIF general secretary B A Nazeer, MGF president Moosabba Beary, MGF general secretary Nissar F Muhammad, P A Razak of Plama Developers and Al-Badriya educational association president B M Mumtaz Ali.
