Udupi, Feb 25: Social worker Vishu Shetty admitted an 80-year-old bedridden mother of two sons who was begging for her living and had given the money earned by begging to them.
The unfortunate woman is Kaveramma, a resident of Tamil Nadu. She had made begging her profession at Udupi and Malpe for the last several years. She used to hand over the money received by begging to her two sons.
She fell seriously sick a few months ago. Social worker Vishu Shetty admitted her to the district hospital with help from senior citizens’ helpline. Though she was bedridden and her condition was critical, her sons never visited their mother.
The hospital doctors had asked to get Kaveramma discharged a week ago. The helpline staff also contacted her sons and informed them about it. Instead of visiting their mother, they asked them to send them if any money was found with her.
Vishu Shetty contacted Hosabelaku Ashram, Bailur Ranganapalke. Ashram heads Tanuja Tarun and Vinayachandra expressed sympathy towards Kaveramma and have agreed to provide shelter to her in the ashram.
There is provision for legal action against children if they fail to look after their parents. Vishu Shetty has urged the helpline to file a legal case against her children and provide justice to her. He has also pleaded with the human rights protection organizations to come to the rescue of the aged woman.
