Kochi : Conversion Allegation - American Tourists Asked to Leave

KOCHI, Jun 14 (Times of India): The fear of proselytization by Christian missionaries has gripped the southern most state Kerala yet again. Three US women tourists were asked to leave the country following complaints that they along with the local pastors were trying to convert "poor families" to Christianity in the coastal area of Alappuzha district in Kerala.
However, the state police said that the three tourists were asked to quit because they had violated the tourist visa rules by trying to attend organized group activities and meetings. The Circle Inspector (CI) of Police J Santhoshkumar who is investigating the case told the TOI that the three women - Shelly Louise Deeds (50) a nurse in Pennsylvania, her daughter Katelyn Heather Deeds (15) and Diane Gean Harrington, a teacher at Wisconsin had arrived here about 15 days ago, and their tourist visas were valid till November this year.

However, the activists of some Hindu organisations complained to the police that the three were trying to convert the poor people by offering them material inducements. ``They were targeting the poor families in the coastal area and were trying to convert them with several offers. The area had significant Hindu and Muslim population while only some recent converts were part of the Christian community. The pastors and foreigners were trying to influence the local people through the new converts. They had visited several houses in the area and conducted prayer sessions,'' RSS Taluk office-bearer Raghu said. The proposed prayer sessions by the local pastors and the tourists created a commotion in the area and the right-wing Hindu organizations threatened to launch a protest.

``We have not received any evidence to indicate the three US women were engaged in conversion-related activities. However, they were about to attend religious prayers session. They have come on visit visas and the law of the land doesn't permit them to attend any organized meeting or group activities including the prayer sessions. We were not clear about their intentions. That is why we asked them to leave the country, and they agreed. There is no deportation involved. They are now waiting for their return tickets,'' the district SP Asok Kumar said.

The police sources said they are gathering the details of the activities of the three pastors Sabu (47), Jacob (34) and James (45) from Kottayam district. The police said the US Embassy India had also been informed about the incident.

The other day I read in daijiworld about a Swiss or a German couple getting married as per the Hindu customs in a temple in Mysore & I could see lot of applause(Including Christians). Today I read about three Americans who were asked to leave the country simply because they attended a prayer meeting....i.e Christians can convert into Hinduism but not vice versa....what a paradox?

Hundreds of hindu swamijis and gurus visit every year to America to perform pujas and even they do preaching over there. Some even got involved with sexual activities too. And converisn is in full swing there and non of them asked to retun from there by the Americans. Very strange things are happening in our country. Shame on the local police as there is no proper proof of conversion by these Americans.

Mr.Arun D'souza dont comment without knowing truth.
Preaching Bible is Holy, but its left to those people who want to follow Christianity or not after listening to Words of God.Nobody is forcing to convert to Christianity but people come to Christianity on their own wish & faith,so dont believe hindu right wing complaints they will do anything to stop development of Christians in India.
By giving material inducements somebody will convert to Christianity, India would be had 100% Christianity by now, because Americans have so many wealth & they would have done it easily, but real Christians want & like real faith in Jesus Christ & Christianity to spread all over this World.

Very sad incendent to read as now a days we always come accross all kind of conersion activities. These conversions are happening in America as well. Lot of White christains got converted to our Hindusim as our people too do conversion with full swing there but no one is worried. Even American police and the people over there are not concerned about conversion activities. So what is the problem if some poor family get converted to other religions for betterment. We see lots of Hare Rama Hare Krishan white people dancing all around here in India as well in Europe.First we need to stop our activities and need to cut down the rest of activities happening in India.

Every human being is installed with a superb instrument known as "brain" to detect which is good which is bad which is allowed which is not allowed. Hence let them choose what is right for them. Why the third parties want to dominate their will and force them to be in their ideology and philosophy. If any one attracted to a particular religion for material or immaterial gains , Spiritual or worldly gains, allow them to choose what they like. What you would gain by interfering in others privacy? leave them to their choice and mind your own business baba...

It’s again a political game and hindutva 'MUDDA', what they did in Mangalore couple of years ago and now also we feel the heat of that incident. The RSS/VHP and its political party BJP is dividing a secular/democratic country by HINDU & Other religion. Other than Hindu religions will have tough time near future.

Had the three tourists went to
any liquor shop in Alappuzha, or
visited any other place totally evil in nature,
they would have been totally free to do that.
    They simply attended a Christian
prayer meeting and asked by the
    police department to leave the
country. They didn't try to convert anybody. This news is
spreading now all over the world
which will put India at the top
list as a very friendly country
    for Christian tourists. Great

Once again Poor families of India. Woman will jump into a well & die OR someone from the family pour gasoline on her. Insidents like this happens and vanishes from our mind time to time. If someone helps them spiritually then it is a religious contraversy. If the conversion is so simple by promising moons and stars... India would have been by now a majority christian country.

Is it right to ask American tourists to leave India?

Shelly Louise Deeds (50) a nurse in Pennsylvania, her daughter Katelyn Heather Deeds (15) and Diane Gean Harrington, a teacher at Wisconsin had arrived here about 15 days ago, and their tourist visas were valid till November this year.

Foreigners like me who love to go to India like to visit beaches or historical places or hill stations or vist friends.

But coming to India as tourists with a special intention and with the help of local pastors trying to convert "poor families" to Christianity in the coastal area of Alappuzha district in Kerala must not happen.

It is cynical that three American women tried to convert the poor people by offering them material inducements.

Faith and a meaning of life cannot be bought like other stuff.

It is a mystery to us how we receive a meaning of life or getting able to believe in God.

It is one of the greatest gifts, human beings see suddenly joy and hope, they believe in God.

Achieving that is normally a long process and it takes time.

Having a meaning of life in our globalised and permanent changing world strengthens people and give certainty there is more to achieve in our world.

Conducting prayer sessions are wonderful to praise and worship God but to proselytize and to offer material inducements must not occur.
Asking them to leave India is wrong.

    Best regards

Why the hell these pastors are engaged in conversion?? These people think if they convert some non Christians, they get heaven!! On the other hand they give trouble as much as possible for the existing Christians. Why can these pastors share their wealth with existing Christians?? They take money from us and live a luxury life and the balance they use for these types of illegal activities. It is not acceptable for true Christians. These pastors create trouble in the society and push innocent parishioners to face the wrath of public. Stop this all nonsense and work for the well being of all existing Christians.

Basic tenets of the constitution are being forgotten. The constitution gives full freedom to propogate your faith.

In this case, the police is right when they say that these folks didn't have the right visa to indulge in religious activities. However RSS is wrong when they speak of "conversion"...Any citizen can convert to Hindu, Muslim or any other faith by his choice. Nobody has the right to interfere.

I am an American citizen, and I
when I visit India, if I am not
    permitted to attend religious
meetings of my choice, that is a
    new information. The U.S. State
    Department must know about this
AT THE EARLIEST and they must warn the U.S. citizens visiting India " DO NOT
    PARTICIPATE IN ANY RELIGIOUS
FUNCTIONS WHILE VISITING INDIA, WHICH MAY LEAD TO DEPORTATION".

    According to the statement of
SP ASOK KUMAR, " we have not received any evidence to indicate the three U.S. women were engaged
    in conversion-related activities.
However, they were about to attend religious prayer session. They have come on visit visas and the law of the land does't permit them to attend any ORGANIZED MEETING OR
    GROUP ACTIVITIES INCLUDING THE
    PRAYER SESSIONS".

THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE OF THE
INDIAN ORIGIN LIVING IN THE U.S.
MUST READ THIS NEW INDIAN TOURIST
REGULATION SO THAT THEY WILL NOT
BE PUT INTO JAIL OR DEPORTED FROM
INDIA. SIMPLY GO TO INDIA, SEE
    THE RELATIVES, SPEND MONEY
IN VACATIONS AND COME BACK SAFELY.
    DO NOT ATTEND ANY RELGIOUS
    MEETINGS, EVEN AT THEIR HOME,
    CHURCH OR PRAYER MEETINGS,
BECAUSE THAT IS THE NEW TOURIST
    LAW OF INDIA.
