Mangaluru, Feb 27: The Clock Tower, one of the important attractions of the city, which was built at a cost of Rs one crore, is not functioning due to poor maintenance.
In addition to complete stoppage of the fountain, the garden is dry due to not watering of grass. Foul smelling water is accumulated in the fountain and mosquitoes are flying around in large numbers. Pieces of plastic and cloth are also seen in the water. Foul smell is emanating from the spot.
The renovation work of old Clock Tower began in 2018 in the midst of stiff opposition of general public with regards to the waste of tax payers’ money. However, after completion the lighting and colourful fountain increased the beauty of Clock Tower.
The original Clock Tower was built in 1968 for people to know time. The bells of the tower used to chime every hour. However, it was demolished in 1994 due to traffic congestion and new one was built from 2018 but not yet inaugurated officially.
“Three pipes fitted to the fountain of clock tower are stolen according to officials. Some others are damaged. The three pipes stolen had colourful lights with German technology. That is why the supply of water to fountain is stopped,” according to executive engineer of Smart City, Linge Gowda.
“This is the second time the pipes are damaged. In addition the area around the fountain is strewn with dirt and garbage. To prevent this grill and mesh will be installed around the fountain,” he said.
