Mangaluru, Feb 28: Contract of Antony Waste Management Cell Private Limited, which was handling solid waste of the city for the past eight years, is extended till July 2023. After July, it is decided to handle solid waste as per scheme that is approved under Bharat Mission Project.
Though there was discussion over giving the waste management contract to new agency, contract of Antony Waste Management was extended as process was getting delayed.
A tender process is underway to collect primary waste collection and transportation in 60 wards of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) from August 2023. The last date for vehicle purchase tender is March 3.
At present, 13 wards are maintained by civic workers, while 47 wards are cleaned by Antony Waste. However, Antony Waste is transporting the waste of all 60 wards as per agreement. According to new rule of the government, direct recruitment and direct payment facility needs to be implemented for civic workers.
According to the population of the city, more than 700 civic workers need to be recruited. Now there are 290 permanent civic workers. Recently, 111 were recruited. For the rest 50%, as per minimum wage rule, direct payment will be done.
Total 60 wards are divided into four zones for handling waste efficiently. The vehicles that will be bought by the MCC will be used for collection and transport of waste. In the beginning, a year-long contract will be given. Based on satisfactory performance, one more year will be extended with conditions.
