Beltangady, Mar 4: Two locations in Ujire and Mundaje reported wildfires on Friday.
A large hill near Kodamballi of Mundaje village caught fire due to sparks from a nearby electrical transformer, causing concern among locals. Within a short time, the fire spread to the nearby rubber estate. More than 50 locals gathered and were able to extinguish the fire. The rubber estate suffered minimal damage. Fire service personnel put out the remaining spots on the hill by evening.
In Ninnigallu of Ujire, a forest area spanning over five to six acres caught fire. Fire service personnel and locals were able to bring the fire under control.
Additionally, a fire was spotted behind an old lodge near the highway in Ujire's old market area. With the assistance of fire service personnel, the fire was extinguished.
The Mundaje area's BSNL network was not functional, making it challenging to contact the fire service personnel. However, they were eventually reached, and a fire engine arrived three hours late as the other two had been deployed elsewhere.
DFO Bharat Kumar, accompanied by Mescom JE Krishnegowda and social worker Sachin Bhide, visited the areas affected by the fire.
