Mangaluru, Mar 4: Police Commissioner Kuldeep Kumar felicitated Kasargod police for their efforts in nabbing the suspect in the murder of a jewelry shop employee in Mangaluru North police limits on February 3. The felicitation ceremony, held on March 4 at the Commissioner's office in Mangaluru, saw Rijesh Kattamballi and Nijin Kumar, along with DySP PK Sudhakaran, being honored by the Commissioner and awarded with appreciation letters on behalf of the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate.
During the press meet, Commissioner Kumar confirmed that a 30-year-old engineering dropout was arrested on March 2 by a joint operation led by the Mangaluru City police along with the Kerala police. He added that the accused had been identified as Shifaz, a resident of Kozhikode who had been working in Dubai from 2014 to 2019. After enrolling in a private college in Mangaluru for a diploma in mechanical engineering, he left the course midway after two years.
The accused, who had been seen on CCTV footage from a nearby shop, was traced to Kasargod with the help of CCTV footage, and the police were able to gather various technical details to solve the case. Commissioner Kumar praised the Kerala police for their assistance in tracing the accused and said that a cash reward of INR 25,000 would be given to the Mangaluru City Police team. He also added that eight teams were formed to trace the case.
It was revealed that the accused had worn multiple layers of shirts to evade identification after committing the crime, which was a murder with the intention of robbery. The accused has confessed to the crime, and the police have sought him for further investigation after seeking police custody.
