Mangalore, Jun 17:
Condemning the murder of Mumbai crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, Dakshina Kannada journalists have demanded strict action against the murderers.

The appeal addressed to the president of India was submitted by P B Harish Rai, president of Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Union (DKWJU) to the additional DC Prabhakar Sharma on Friday June 17.

In the appeal, DKWJU urged the President of India to direct the Maharashtra government to hand over the investigation to the CBI.

They also condemned the Mumbai police for releasing three suspects of the Chhota Shakeel gang detained in connection with Dey’s murder, due to lack of evidence.

Following the submission of the appeal, P B Harish Rai said that DKWJU strongly condemns the brutal killing of the journalist and that the journalists will hereafter fear a threat to their lives. He urged the government to take strict action against the murderers and also to extend security to journalists all over the nation in order to uphold the freedom of press.

The additional DC on receiving the appeal assured that it will be sent to the president of India without delay and thanked all the journalists for carrying out a peaceful protest.

DKWJU general secretary Shreenivas Nayak, executive committee members Dayanand Kukkaje, Satyavathi, Sudhakar Ermal, Wilfred D’Souza, Harsha, union vice-president Ramakrishna, R Jagannath Shetty Baala among others were present.

Dey, who worked for Mid Day, was shot dead by four unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants near his residence in Powai. He was considered one of the most effective writers on Mumbai's underworld. Reporting on crime for the past 22 years, he had wide contacts in several police departments. Dey had been writing about gangsters Dawood Ibrahim, Chota Rajan among others for a long time and also other stories related to the underworld.
